In terms of influence on pop culture/society worldwide, how would you rank countries in order of being the most influential?
1. United States
The US is undeniably the most influential country worldwide. From music, movies and TV shows , you will find traces of American pop culture in the majority of countries around the world, regardless of the political agendas of the retrospective countries.
2. England/UK
The UK pop culture scene is mostly influential through the form of music. Although many UK artists have not always found it easy to breakthrough into the American market, UK pop culture has often had a much bigger influence in other parts of the world. Of course, that's not to suggest that UK pop culture has not achieved mass success in the United States. In fact, the UK was largely responsible for the trajectory of '60s and '80s music, thanks to artists/bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Duran Duran and Dire Straits. The UK pop culture scene is also very influential in most parts of Europe.
3. Australia
Since the Early-Mid '70s, Australia has produced many successful international artists, such as AC/DC, INXS, The Bee Gees, Men At Work, Kylie Minogue and Silverchair, just to name a few. Australian pop culture is arguably the most influential in South-East Asia (e.g Indonesia, the Philippines) and New Zealand. Australian TV Shows and movies generally don't achieve as much success worldwide, meaning that music is the country's most influential export.

Personally, I would probably put Japan in the top 3 instead of Australia. The rest of the world has imported lots of their anime, video games, and especially technology. Without Japan, the modern world would be a completely different place. Australia is certainly significant, but it doesn't have the massive stranglehold over specific industries like the US, UK, and Japan do.

I never even gave Japan a thought, to be honest. I agree, Japan would be in the Top-3 in place of Australia.

I would say Canada is above Australia, especially these days. (In terms of music)

I would say Canada is above Australia, especially these days. (In terms of music) If we're talking about the Mid/Late 2010s, I would agree. However, I believe Australia has traditionally had more of an influence on the pop cultures of other countries, especially in the '80s and '90s.

And I don't know about Indonesia.

I think there is a good chance that Australian pop culture was influential in Indonesia and other South-East Asia countries, due to the geographical proximity to Australia and many South-East Asian countries adopting western influences.

Just giving it a thought, Australia has hardly been influential at all this decade, which is really strange. New Zealand has even been more influential than us, due to Lorde emerging onto the scene!

I think you could make a case for several European countries or even Australia as being in the Top-5 for most influential countries.

It's easy to assume that we had our own rooaboo phase just like the USA did back in the '80s, but really, though most people in my country know these songs, they don't know their country of origin:

aja675That's interesting to hear. I would have thought that people in the Philippines would have at least known about Tina Arena's country of origin!

Probably India would be fourth, since not only does it have Bollywood, it's a critical centre for technology, which continues to grow more important with each passing year. Its massive population is certainly worth noting, too. China would be fifth because even though fairly little of its homegrown media is exported to most countries, its enormous population plays a critical part in international marketing, not to mention its economy is one of the most dominant in the world, making it a vital trade centre for all other nations worldwide.
