What would be your personal favourite eras in terms of culture? Imo: 1. 1998-2003 2. 2013-2017 3. 1981-1985 (2009-2011 gets an honourable mention ) I personally think that 1998-2003 is the best overall cultural era. I think that the music during this era was pretty good and it produced some of my favourite TV shows and movies, I also like the generally optimistic atmosphere of the time.

Best:
1. 1993-1996 - Mid 90s: I pretty much like all aspects of popular culture from this period. The Mid '90s were arguably one of the greatest eras for rock music, with many strong releases across the board. There was a great variety of music on the charts, which while I may not be fond of some of the genres that were popular at the time (such as gangsta rap), I appreciate it for what it was. I really like the "dark" aesthetic of the time, as well as the emphasis on individuality.
2. 1997-2001- Late 90s/Y2k Era: Even though i'm not particularly fond of the cheesy nature of many of the releases (i.e "Barbie Girl"), I appreciate the optimistic vibe of the era. I think the Late 90s/Y2K era would have been a great time to experience as a "tween" (10-12 year old) or a teenager.
Worst:
2012-now - Early/Mid 2010s: If there was ever a time period which best represents the decline of popular culture, it would be this one. The music is absolutely awful. There is no variety on the charts whatsoever and creativity seems to be suppressed in favour of consumerism. I'm not a fan of electronic or rap music as it is, but EDM and trap wouldn't be so bad if it didn't over-saturate all aspects of mainstream music.
With the exception of the Marvel Universe movies and the odd release (Hacksaw Ridge), movies have generally been quite underwhelming. I feel as though Hollywood has run out of ideas completely, which is why so many sequels/reboots have been released. Television hasn't been too bad, however there is generally a lack of variety in terms of the most popular series'. I hate how smartphones have taken over people's lives as well. There's so much that I hate about this era.

1. 2004-2009 (this era just seems packed in general. Flash games, MySpace, early Web 2.0 culture, highly diverse cell phones, YouTube Poops, HD and online gaming absolutely exploding, Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii, an incredible time for video games, shows like Phineas and Ferb, Drake and Josh, and Total Drama, an optimistic vibe toward technology, the Frutiger Aero aesthetic, politically incorrect humor like White Chicks, peak-era Family Guy, and Tropic Thunder, Xbox Live, Halo 2 and 3, etc. I'd love to go back) 2. 1995-2000 (the internet absolutely exploding, techno-optimism at its height, the internet exploding in popularity, the dot-com boom, movies, both live-action and animated becoming much more experimental and ambitious, Windows 95 and 98, video games diversifying with games like Pokemon Red and Blue, Final Fantasy VII, Half-Life, Banjo-Kazooie, GeoCities, Nintendo 64, PS1, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, the Y2K aesthetic, see-through colorful electronics, etc.) 3. 1991-1994 (alternative culture in its prime, beautiful 16-bit graphics, the Genesis vs SNES battles, Beavis and Butt-Head, peak-era Seinfeld, Windows 3.1, Doom, Mortal Kombat, Wolfenstein 3D, peak-era Sonic, grunge, peak-era Disney Renaissance)

Love 1991-1994, good movies and good music, good PC games around this time as well. I also love 1995-2001/2, The 90’s & early 00’s are my absolute favorite decades and eras. ( Except for the year 1990, it feels empty compared with the rest of the 90’s for some reason ) Obviously I wouldn’t lump 1991-2008 as an era together, but starting in 1991 and ending in 2008 are my favorite periods is what I mean. The answer is 1991-2008.

I think the first three quarters of 1990 felt late 1980s and the fourth quarter of 1990 felt early 1990s. I think 1989-mid 1990 give or take late 1990 and early 1991 is an in between period between the 1980s and 1990s. 1991 mostly seems early 1990s.

I know this might sound contrarian but i used to really, like REALLY, love the y2k/turn of the millennium era before it went mainstream in 2020.
I guess i find the mid 90s cool but only because of the games and dance music
