Knowing that the West Coast Eagles are quite popular over in Perth, I'm sure there would've been jubilant celebrations on the streets this afternoon/evening! On the flipside, Eddie McGuire won't be happy.

I can't see attendances or ratings for the AFLX improving, despite the lure of high-profile players. I think most people realise that the AFLX concept is flawed and exists purely as a means to impact the success of the other footy codes. I'd be surprised if the competition will still be around in five years time.

It’s a bit of a worry that after only the one season of it the AFL are already going to revamp the whole competition. Says how bad last seasons was with attendance and viewership . I personally had very little interest in what I see as a “gimmick” to try and compete with the BBL cricket. I doubt my opinion on it will change next year despite the format change. Mind you, all of the various preseason comps the AFL has tried over the years has not held my interest for very long. The season proper is long enough for me to get my fix.

It makes you wonder if it will ever come to a point where the AFL finally realises that they are investing money into a sinking ship. But then again, who knows what might happen. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if the AFL decides to persevere with the competition, despite the low viewership and attendances. I mean, look at the GWS Giants. When they entered into the competition back in 2009, no one gave them a chance and a lot of people expected them to fold within a few years. Now their membership is growing each year and the 2018 season was the first time they reached the Semi-Finals.

Vice-captains named for new-look AFLX The only reason that I would watch AFLX is because its the closest thing to ordinary AFL and I can't wait any longer..

AFLX is the McDonalds of Aussie Rules football. Agree, this offseason has seemingly lasted an eternity. March (February if you want to watch the woman have a go at it lol) can’t come quick enough! Speaking of, I reckon we will run another AFL/NRL tipping competitions on Popedia this year if you want to participate them.

Speaking of AFLX, i'm not sure what you, telemelbs and @paul think of this idea, but we could start the AFL tipping competition early and incorporate the AFLX into it? Maybe we could do something where tipping the winners of the AFLX matches earns you double points or something?

Doubt I'll do the tipping this year. Busy running it on another forum.

I wonder how many actually care to be honest (apart from the actual Marketing Dept.)?

Very few I would imagine. I would be surprised if the AFLX competition is still running in a couple of years time. AFLX will soon be dead, but knowing the league they will just invent another format until something has relative success. It’s nothing new, they have had numerous competitions over the years! I don’t know why the AFL haven’t already tried to get a State of Origin series up and running again (like the NRL do). The AFL used to have SoO but the interest declined during the 90s, with the last one in 1999.

The AFL used to have SoO but the interest declined during the 90s, with the last one in 1999. That would be a great idea! One thing which I would like to see (even though I personally wouldn't watch it ) would be a State of Origin knock-out competition where every single state/territory is represented by a team and they all battle it out to reach the Grand Final. With the possible exceptions of the Northern Territory and the ACT, I think it would be pretty feasible. You would also increase interest in the sport in states such as Queensland and NSW, as the two states would barrack behind their teams and it would give them a reason to watch the sport. I think it would be a pretty interesting concept and it's a shame that the AFL hasn't considered starting it up.
