Wake me up when the BBL has finished so I can go back to keeping an eye on the Sheffield Shield. There is still roughly 2 1/2 weeks to go. I am a fan of the BBL but it has been dragging out for far too long this year and it shows. And they had plans to extend it even further as soon as next year. CA would have to be seriously rethinking that surely!

Making the decision to extend the season up until the end of February would have made sense if the competition was comprised of more teams, but doing so with just 8 teams is ridiculous. All this move emphasises is the level of contempt that Cricket Australia has towards it's fans. BBL supporters are not going to spend their hard-earned money on attending games if they're not going to get any value out of it.

BBL was intended to be a short and sharp summer holiday fun tournament. In regards to the TV viewership, the ridiculous new deal CA struck with Seven and Fox haven’t helped their cause either. For a still newish competition that already struggled to take off in the first couple of years (Fox had the exclusive rights back then too), locking away a dozen or more and having the rest of them simulcast with Pay TV has totally split the audience. Because of their greed fans either have to miss a few of their matches here and there or cough up and subscribe to Foxtel. It was a really dumb decision and I hope they are regretting going back to Fox and ditching Ten which grew the game for them.

Extending the season is not something that is ideal and it's not my personal preference, however in saying that, I can see why CA may see the incentive in doing so. I think the decision can be successful if CA can strike the right balance between is necessary and what will benefit the game. 93 games with just 8 teams isn't the solution, in any case. The current media deal has definitely been hugely responsible for the decline in attendances and ratings. I think it would be interesting to know how the matches would have performed on Seven (ratings wise) if the Foxtel component didn't exist. Ratings would undoubtedly be higher, but I wonder if they would match the ratings that Ten was recording when it had the rights to the competition? I'm inclined to say that they wouldn't, to be honest, especially when you factor in the additional matches and viewer fatigue.

I can't warm to a lot of 7s commentators. Tufnell drives me mad. So does Brad Hodge. Average cricketer turned average commentator.
I want my Sheffield Shield back.

Really? And where were these 10,000 fans surveyed? Clearly the majority think otherwise as the attendance has dropped way off.
If they want a slightly longer season then perhaps start it earlier so it’s over by late January then. February is too late to be still playing Big Bash as the major target audience (being families with kids) have other priorities by this stage, like returning to work and starting the new school year.

You've really got to question the legitimacy of their fan engagements. Were 10,000 fans really surveyed, or was it just an internal survey for CA employees? Like you mentioned, the results are speaking for themselves and it's clear that the majority of fans believe otherwise.
