I understand it's still too early to know who will be the defining artists of the next decade, but so far we have some out there who either could or will be substantial candidates.
I can see Khalid, Alessia Cara, Logic, Camila Cabello, Halsey, SZA, and one of the former One Direction members as some to be defining music in the next era. They all seem to have the potential to ride the current wave of the mainstream right now and continue to dominate into the future. What do you all think and are there any others who could also be significant in the future as well?

I think Harry Styles will be a defining artist of the Early-Mid 2020s. Out of the former One Direction members, I believe he is the most likely one to experience longevity in the mainstream. Personally, I hope he does enjoy a long solo-career, because he didn't have to take the path that he did. He could easily have released an EDM or "teen-pop" album, which i'm sure that's what the record label was hoping for. I may not have liked him during his time in One Direction, but after the release of his debut album, he has earned my respect.
I'm not entirely convinced that Logic, Alessia Cara and SZA will enjoy long-lasting careers, to be honest. IMO, they'll likely just end up as defining artists of the Late 2010s. Khalid, Camila Cebllo and Halsey could remain as defining artists into the new decade.

SZA has been one of my favorite artists for a while, so I was happy she blew up last year and I hope she has a long career, but she has gone on record saying her debut album could be her last, and she'll just do music until it's not fun. It's interesting you mention Harry Styles, because I'm unsure if he'll be the one to last in the mainstream. Niall Horan, Zayn, Liam Payne, and Harry Styles all had a song on the Billboard Year End 2017 List, but Harry Styles' single, Sign of the Times, was the least successful of the four. I have a feeling he may choose to go more mainstream with his next album though, because it seems to have helped the other One Direction members (excluding Louis).

Harry Styles was the "face" of One Direction, so I think it's fair to suggest that he is the most well-known by the public. When people think of One Direction, they generally think of Harry Styles. Also, "Sign of the Times" may have been the least successful of the four, but that's not to undermine how successful it was in it's own right. It topped the charts in the UK and Australia, peaked at #4 in the US and #6 in Canada and New Zealand respectively. The song was also well received by critics and his self-titled album was also successful on album charts worldwide. On that point, I'm not too sure about that, to be honest. I think he already has a clear idea in mind as to the path he wants to take. He would have known that his self-titled album would be a big risk and polarize listeners, but he made it anyway. Had "Sign of the Times" only just managed to reach the Top-50, I think he may have changed his approach. However, I personally think that he will stick to his intentions and continue on the path that he has took. Also, there's no guarantee that Horan, Zayn and Payne will be able to replicate the success with their next albums. By the time their next albums come out, the music scene may have changed in a way that EDM and trap are no longer relevant/popular.

That's very true, he is the most well known, and I think that's something that helped him do so well, and his song was also successful in general, but I think the longevity of the others' chart success could cause him to change it up a bit and go more mainstream while also still kind of sticking to his new sound if you get what I mean. It's interesting how each of them kind of have their own lane atm, Harry with soft rock, Niall with acoustic pop, Zayn with r&b/pop, and Liam with hip hop/pop. I think Harry could have the longest and most successful career, and wouldn't be surprised if he did, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it ended up beng Zayn or Niall.

To me, Zayn hasn't really set himself up to have a long and established music career. His success so far has largely been as a result of his collaborations with others, such as Sia, Taylor Swift and PartyNextDoor. Once the music scene undergoes a shift, I really have my doubts that he will be able to stay relevant. The same applies to Liam. Unless he incorporates more influences into his music, he too may find it difficult to remain relevant in the long-term. IMO, at this stage, Niall is the only other former 1D member who has a good chance of having a long and successful career.

I think Zayn will have a pretty established career, he's been the most relevant so far.

Well, I hope they all do. I've listened to lots of their songs, and they were outstanding. They seem to have the potential to pull it off. That prediction you both said could end up being right though if their next albums don't chart in the mainstream. Their songs are much different than what's current right now.
As for Harry, that could happen if rock makes a return to the mainstream soon, and not much later. So far though, some folks predict that it could make a comeback and if it does, then we have more variety on the radio again compared to recent years.
I have to agree with Sharksfan on Zayn. I genuinely think he will end up as a late 10s artist especially since he left the band in 2015, and has had a few solo songs in the last two years. All the others, I have a possible green light on them since I have heard all their single songs (including Louis).

He could be another one. I have genuinely listened to a lot of his songs than just Rockstar, White Iverson, and Congratulations. You should look to Big Lie, Flex and I Fall Apart. They sound different than the first two mentioned.

So, there a few more artists that I see being a good contender for the 2020s. What do you all think about Dua Lipa, Charlie Puth, and Kelela? Do you think they have what it takes to dominate into the next decade?

So far though, some folks predict that it could make a comeback and if it does, then we have more variety on the radio again compared to recent years. It's hard to say. He may remain successful in the mainstream, even if rock music does not make a comeback of sorts. From what I've read, a lot of people have praised the path he has taken and how well composed his debut album was. I'm not entirely convinced about Dua Lipa's longevity. I believe she may remain successful for at least another 2-3 years, but after that, I think she will likely become irrelevant. Charlie Pluth could remain as a defining artist of the Early 2020s. His most recent singles have generated a lot of hype and publicity. As for Kelela, I honestly don't know too much about her music to make a judgement.

Yeah, that's a possibility. I mean considering Harry was the face of 1D, he could take off in the mainstream very well. This year going to be an exciting time for him.
Well right now, it's Dua's second year in the charts, so she has time to push herself to her potential. I've heard some of her tracks on her debut album, and they were decent. Charlie Puth, I agree. Attention so far is pretty good. As for Kelela, she's had a good start thanks to her song LMK, so I think she will make it. If you haven't listened to Kelela's track, I'll post it below. I know it's not your type of music, but it's different than what's current right now.

Alright, It's time to update this thread. It's been a year now since I made this thread. In addition, we got some more new members who can add to the topic. When I originally made the subject, the first round of contenders was Cardi B, Khalid, J Balvin, Alessia Cara, Logic, Camila Cabello, Halsey, SZA, and one of the former One Direction members that could be the defining artists of the next decade. However, it seems that Khalid, Halsey, Cardi B, Camilla Cabello and maybe J Balvin are the ones still in the running. When I revived the thread, there was a second round of candidates being Dua Lipa, Charlie Puth, Rhianna (although there's a good chance she will be seen more as a 00s/10s artist), and Kelela. Since then, it seems only Charlie Puth made it. At this point, now that we're 11 months away from 2020, I think it's a good time make more predictions. My question is who are some artists right now that were not originally listed in the first two rounds you all think could define the next decade?
I have some guesses so far and they are Billie Ellish, Troye Sivan, Lauv, Anne Marie, Ella Mai, Kehlani and Normani.

I think SharksFan99 is way too optimistic about the 2020s being dominated by rock-leaning artists. I can certainly imagine Imagine Dragons continuing well into the next decade simply because they're so indispensable to radio stations and advertisers looking for something inoffensively multi-purpose, but Harry Styles is basically a one-hit wonder as a solo artist. "Sign of the Times" fell off the charts extremely quickly and all of his subsequent releases garnered minimal attention at best. Speaking of One Direction, I think I can confidently say Zayn isn't going to be one of that decade's leading faces. He may have been highly successful immediately after going solo, but his career completely and utterly lost momentum throughout 2018, during which "Let Me" flopped worldwide and his Icarus Falls album achieved virtually no success whatsoever when it came out. People are moving on to younger, more hip hop-oriented talent instead. He may have an edgy aesthetic, but he's still to melodic at heart to keep up with current trends. I would imagine that the 2020s will continue to be dominated by Cardi B, who destroyed Nicki Minaj's career (not that I know why...) and isn't slowing down anytime soon. We'll most likely also see plenty more of Ariana Grande, who has reached the peak of her career and is basically what Madonna was in 1985, Britney was in 1999, and Gaga was in 2009. Hopefully Dua Lipa will stay extremely popular as well, but I'm terrified that her success will flame out as a result of her being too wholesome for the general public's obsession with bitchiness and edginess.
