You know what, hearing the song that supposedely started 2010s music again, I actually think it's incredibly "noughties pop".
(Even the clip screams 2000s with all those haircuts and bedazzling) Not only is the beat fairly reminiscent of 2006-07 Fergie stuff, but it is just so so dated compared to todays standards of edm-pop.
A very 2010s example.
2009 is actually exactly like 1979 musically. That year New Wave exploded but the influences of what defined its decade (Disco) were too apparent to really classify as part of the new decade.

YESSSSSSS EXACTLY!!! People on here always say that this is the start of 2010s music but it's honestly extremely late 2000s sounding to me. That type of music peaked in 2009-2010 has been dead since 2011/2012.

It's literally 2000s. Why do people argue about this?

I think people on here and on Inthe00s really exaggerate how 2010s 2009 was. Nothing from 2009 has been relevant since around 2013. The culture in 2009 was extremely late 2000s IMO.

I would say 2009 leaned towards the 2010s but there were elements of culture that year that were still very 2000s. Most notably it was the last year that emo fashion/styles were still relevant and the last year post-grunge was popular. I still used a digital camera in 2009 (the iPhone built-in camera was awful prior to the iPhone 4). Obama was President but the political stories that dominated the year were the recession and the war in Iraq, both very 2000s issues.
Still, 2009 was the year that basically set up the 2010s.

Bad Romance/Pokerface were her 2009 hits

^^^ Just Dance is typically the first thing people bring up to make the case that '10s culture started in late 2008. Well that and "I Kissed A Girl" by Katy Perry.
This is a unique take on it but in my opinion, these things signaled the arrival of '10s music, most of them occurring in the fall of 2009.
1) David Guetta going mainstream in the summer of 2009 2) Justin Bieber's breakout in the fall of 2009 3) Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster in the fall of 2009 4) Ke$ha's debut in the fall of 2009

I honestly don't remember hearing anything about him in 2009. Maybe he emerged into the mainstream a few months earlier in the US?

I've just researched the chart history of the song and apparently "One Time" debuted within the ARIA Top-50 on the 17th January 2010, which explains why I hadn't heard of Justin Bieber back in 2009.

...electro-pop music being a force, Michael Jackson's death, shows like Glee, Modern Family, Jersey Shore debuting a cultural 2000s year. The entire first-half of 2009 wasn't like that though.

He was huge over here in the summer of 2009. longaotian might find this amusing but there was a Kiwi in my class who moved to Canada in 2009 and she said "In New Zealand I never heard of Bieber but here no one can shut up about him"

I Kissed A Girl sounds 2000s to me. I remember when Katy Perry first came onto the scene I thought she was going to punk rocker.

It's somewhat reminiscent of Nothing in This World by Paris Hilton, which was from 2006.
