I was browsing through a few of my old posts on PerC and I came across this thread. It is a report based on kids using the internet at just two years of age: What are your thoughts on this? Personally, I believe parents should be monitoring their children's internet usage and they should ideally be encouraging their kids not to become so reliant on their devices for entertainment. It's incredible to believe that two year olds are using smartphone and iPad devices. When I was two years old (in 2001), smartphones, iPads and tablets were still a pipe dream. The one thing that concerns me, is that parents are buying these devices for children because they believe it is an easy way to keep their children entertained. I mean, you could argue that using devices such as smartphones and iPads at a young age can potentially be beneficial in the long-term and their usage of technology, from an early age, may result in the generation being able to advance our current technology. However, I still believe their usage should be monitored. I know it's cliche, but parents should be encouraging their kids to play outside and interact with other children. Developing social skills at an early age is vital for emotional and psychological development. If these kids spend more time interacting with the world around them and not interacting with a smartphone or iPad device, it will allow them to explore more prospects in the years to come.

I wasn't allowed to use the internet until I was about 8 years old because I had very protective parents. If parents want their toddler to have internet access, yeah monitor them because you never know what kids might click on.

2?!?! That is ridiculous! I only remember using the internet a few times before the age of 8 or 9 and most of the times were for research for school projects.
I agree. Parents need to build that foundation of friendship for them before they enter Primary School. An yes, do monitor them.

@zampakid AussieTV I agree with both of you. Ages 2-3 are simply way too young to be using a tablet or computer device.

I think if you're going to do it, it should definitely be monitored. Wouldn't want them to watch those "Elsa" videos on YouTube.
Personally, I would leave it until they are 6/7. 1-2 hours of television is okay, but other than that they should be running around and playing. I know that's easier said than done though, some people are very busy and don't have the time or energy.

Lazy parenting these days, isn’t it? — “Here you go Jimmy, there’s your tablet. Now, keep yourself entertained until I can be bothered entertaining you properly myself”. Is it any wonder why the world has so many problems.

Honestly, I think a lot (if not, all) of the blame needs to be directed at the parents. In many cases, they are the ones who are setting a bad example by excessively using smartphone devices themselves. There was actually a report on Nine News tonight which showed that 60% of 4-18 year olds feel neglected because their parents are spending too much time on their devices and not devoting enough attention to them. Yet, despite this, kids will continue to get the short end of stick when it comes to obsessive internet usage, because you know, adults are always in the right.

I'm honestly wondering what a 2 year old even can do on the internet, probably not much since they can't barely even write yet.
If it's just them watching a bunch of toddler shows on YouTube or Netflix monitored by their parents then I don't have many issues with that to be honest.

I taught my grandmother how to use a computer when I was three. I used to always go on some paint program at her house. I think it's okay if it's treated like a little activity; twenty minutes or so spent coloring or playing an educational game. But it should not be a baby sitter. Unfortunately the television has been one since the fifties, so it's all people know anymore. As someone who admittedly grew up with a lot of screentime and came out unscathed, it's hard for me to comment a whole lot on that. But the tablet thing concerns me for more than unsupervised browsing and watching, because I worry it could cause bodily harm. Poor eyesight and posture, worsened handwriting; I know a lot of people my age, myself included, already have trash for vision when you compare to our parents at our respective ages. This is anecdotal fueled speculation on my part, however there is a lot to consider with new technology, especially when not enough time has passed to conducte any proper studies on its affects.
One thing I cannot stand seeing: Toddlers in strollers watching tablets. They can watch their surroundings!

Yeah, I have my doubts that a 2 year old would have the ability to search for something on the internet by themselves. By "accessing the internet", I'd say it would be in the form of their parents searching for something on the tablet and then handing the tablet back over to the toddler so they can watch it.

Kids who can't read yet aren't typically doing much with the keyboard. I remember finding it daunting to begin to use at 6 or so, since the letters aren't in order. It's easy however to just go by pictures, colors and icons. I knew how to get on Paint because of the little paint brush, for instance.

Go to any restaurant. Parents give the kids iPads during dinner to keep them quiet. When I was misbehaving at the restaurant in 2003, I just got told to shut up .

Yup, I was told to shut up and behave. So, if I continued to misbehave (which I normally did ), then I was given a smack. Oh how the times have changed!

I actually experienced this first hand with one of my younger nieces who is now 7 years old. She had an iPad when she was just 2 years old and she found a Dora video of her cursing and my sister was mad and said "no more bad Dora". The fact toddlers are tech-savy is amazing. The can use a tablet before using the potty. I think this is gonna be a thing that defines 2010s born kids.

I don't think I went to any restaurants (excluding take-away "restaurants") when I was 4 years old, but then again, I guess it would be kind of silly for a Mum to take their 4 year old out to dinner and no one else. Rather, it will be a trait that will effect all future generations of kids. Before we know it, in another 15-20 years time, 2 year old kids will be entering into their own virtual worlds.
