Hi all. As you may know, we have briefly trialed both the Shoutbox and "Chatango" live-chat options through our 8-month history. Both chat-boxes have been well received, however they have varying features. In the instance of the majority of members wanting a chatbox to return, which chatbox would you like to see return to the forum on a permanent basis?
Shoutbox:
An example of the Shoutbox feature. The Shoutbox is found at the bottom of every page. As it is a Proboards feature, you are not required to create a separate account to use the feature, however it has limited features. For instance, to receive new messages, you need to refresh the chatbox. New messages do not come through automatically. You also can't upload images to the chatbox.
Chatango:
This is an example of how Popedia looks with the "Chatango" live chat. The little red-box in the bottom-right hand corner stays there permanently and is accessible on any page of the forum. The number to the left of the "chat" symbol represents how many people are currently online. An advantage of the "Chatango" live chat, is that it offers plenty of features and the chat is live (unlike the Shoutbox, which requires you to refresh the chat to receive new messages). In addition to this, it also allows you to upload images into the live chat and there are plenty of emojis available to use.
It's worth noting that you do need to create an account to use the live chat (as Chatango is a separate website), however creating an account only requires you to use an email address and password. It is also free to create an account and your email address is not revealed publicly, only you can see your email address.
In your opinion, which live-chat feature do you think should be used on Popedia? Should there even be a live-chat at all? Ideally, it would be great to hear from everyone over this matter, as it involves everyone in some way and it has an influence on the forum experience. Thanks.
