I caught up with a friend of mine today and as "Bring Me to Life" by Evanescence happened to be playing on the radio on our way back to my house, we were reminiscing about some of the biggest bands/artists of the 2000s. When you think about it, a lot of popular artists/bands from the 2000s are completely irrelevant now and kids/young teens of today might not even know who they are! It's weird to think of it like that, because the 2000s still seem somewhat recent to me and I can't believe that the decade is beginning to approach "retro" territory. The conversation I had with him, inspired me to create this thread. What are your thoughts on some of the most popular artists/bands of the 2000s? Do you like them or have you never particularly liked their music? Nickelback: I've never been a fan of Nickelback. The only song of theirs which I don't mind is "How You Remind Me". To be honest, I can understand why a lot of people don't like the band. Snoop Dog: Snoop Dog was essentially to the Mid 2000s what Ed Sheeran is to the Late 2010s. He was one of the biggest music stars at the time and the media loved to publicise him and his music. I've never liked any of his songs, although some of them do admittedly make me feel a bit nostalgic. Linkin Park: This section is going to be a bit longer. Linkin Park were my favourite childhood band. I was introduced to their music as a toddler, when my Mum used to listen to Hybrid Theory in the car. Meteora was released roughly two weeks after my 4th birthday and despite my age, I enjoyed listening to all of the songs on the album, especially Faint and Nobody's Listening. Back in 2007, my Mum and I would try to look for additional songs of theirs on Limewire and we would burn some of their "songs" (which weren't actually by Linkin Park, but by other artists/bands. They were listed as Linkin Park songs.) onto disc. That same year, we joined the Linkin Park "Underground" Fan club and I went with my Mum and a friend of hers, to see Linkin Park perform at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on the 20th October. It was the first (and so far, the only) proper concert I had ever been to. Out of the 13,000 people who went to see them perform, I was the youngest person there. For Christmas that year, I received the What I've Done EP as a present. I remember feeling disappointed that Linkin Park had changed their style with Midnights to Midnight. Time has since passed and if i'm going to be honest, i'm not overly into them anymore. I have Hybrid Theory and Meteora in my car (and on my phone), but I rarely listen to them. Those two albums will always hold a special place within me, but I don't think I will ever be into their music as much as I was. Avril Lavigne - I have never really been a fan of her music, although I don't mind "Sk8er Boi". Her earlier songs aren't too bad (e.g "Complicated"), but I don't like any of the songs from later in her career.

Though this sounds like a dumb question, but do you think that Danielle Bregoli is today's version of Soulja Boy?

LOL, her career name is "Bhad Babie" or something like that, don't you remember not too long ago there was a thread on inthe00s about her and her first single "These Heaux" which was released late last year.

I agree with you on Nickelback and Snoop Dog, although I never really hated or disliked them, they were always just sort of there. (I did like a few of their songs though ) Also, I actually like Avril Lavignes first album "Let Go" from the early 2000s, although same as you I don't really like much of her other stuff.

Beyoncé - Generally, I thought this woman's songs were consistently okay, whether with Destiny's Child or solo. In hindsight, however, "Crazy in Love" is an utter classic, and I would also give high marks to "Bootylicious" with Destiny's Child, but otherwise, I still don't understand what the fuss was about Queen Bey in the 2000s aside from her commanding glamour. I think "Irreplaceable" is especially overrated, in spite of one interesting line in the chorus, as the song itself sounds extremely middling to my ears and hardly worth its megahit status. The singles from Destiny Fulfilled were all pretty subpar, too, especially "Soldier."
Lady Gaga - Gaga's first two albums were an enormous breath of fresh air to me when they came out because my country had just suffered through three and a half years of abysmal ringtone rap and very few songs that were fun, colourful, and upbeat. Both The Fame and especially The Fame Monster still hold up as classic pop albums, in my opinion, although Gaga's subsequent work was nowhere near as strong.
Britney Spears - This gal was the very face of pop music back when I was first becoming fully aware of pop music. I think the ferocious backlash against teen pop in the early 2000s conditioned me into disliking Britney for a while, the same way I forced myself to hate the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC, even though I later realized that I always really enjoyed those groups in the first place. Britney's track record is fairly mixed for me. I think "Baby One More Time" is solid but overrated, and I feel the same about "Oops!...I Did It Again," but I absolutely love "(You Drive Me) Crazy," "Lucky," and "Stronger." The hit songs from Britney, In the Zone, and Blackout are mostly good but not great; my favourites are probably "Everytime" and "Break the Ice." Circus' hit singles are kind of lackluster, but I rather dislike the nonsensical blunder, "If U Seek Amy." In general, while Britney definitely had some excellent songs to her name, she's nowhere near my favourite pop singer of her era; I never quite gravitated to her ultra-nasal voice that typically played more as hollow sass to me rather than soulfully impactful or charming.
Coldplay - This band was absolutely inescapable during the 2000s, especially the song "Clocks" in particular. I always considered them to be alright, but in more recent years, I've fallen in love with "Trouble," "In My Place," "Speed of Sound," and "Fix You." They often earned the negative reputation for recording redundant piano music, but in the most positive cases, their sound was great at setting an intense mood, although this did not always play out.
Black Eyed Peas - Back when this group was popular, I tended to like them for striking a fun balance between hip hop and straight-up pop. Unlike all the thug and later ringtone rappers of the day, the Peas were among the few hip hop acts of the day who seemed to keep the genre positive and carefree throughout the decade. I actually didn't realize until way later just how despised they had been. Truth be told, however, I think I only ever truly loved a small handful of their hit singles. "Let's Get It Started" is by far their greatest work, with "Where Is the Love?," "Don't Lie," and "Meet Me Halfway" trailing not too far behind. On the other hand, "Hey Mama," "My Humps," and "Imma Be" are all horrendous, while the rest of their songs are mostly so-so at best. I guess I jut appreciated this group's existence more than their music in itself.

LOL, her career name is "Bhad Babie" or something like that, don't you remember not too long ago there was a thread on inthe00s about her and her first single "These Heaux" which was released late last year. No I don't. I mustn't have read the thread. That's fair enough. To be honest, part of the reason why I dislike Nickelback to the extent that I do, is because my Mum liked their music at the time and she used to play their songs regularly in the car. It's bad enough that most of their songs sound the same. It was horrible having to listen to them over and over again. "Sk8er Boi" and "Complicated" are the only two songs I know from Let Go. The singles from Destiny Fulfilled were all pretty subpar, too, especially "Soldier." I think a lot of people liked her, because of her public persona. Beyonce has a strong, empowered image and she is perceived as being a good role-model for women around the world. Myself personally, I have never liked any of her songs. "Crazy in Love" isn't too bad, I guess, and it does admittedly make me feel nostalgic for 2003. However, that would be the full extent to which I have any sort of interest in her songs. I actually really don't like "Run The World (Girls)" and it would be on my list for worst songs of the 2010s. Your perception of Coldplay is much more positive than mine! In my opinion, Coldplay would have to be one of the most overrated bands over the past 25 years. They're not a bad band, as such, but I really don't think they deserve to be as critically acclaimed as they are. Their music has never exactly been innovative or groundbreaking.

"Sk8er Boi" and "Complicated" are the only two songs I know from Let Go. That album's third single, "I'm with You," was also quite huge, and its fourth single, "Losing Grip," also attained some decent success. I personally love all four hit singles. While the rest of the album isn't nearly as good as a whole, I have a particular soft spot for "Nobody's Fool," which may be the absolute cutest pop song I've ever heard in my life. It's produced like a cheesy bubblegum pop song and features amateur rapping with bizarre lyrics ("I'm not the milk and Cheerios in your spoon?"), but Avril sells it with such a homespun charm that I just love every second of it. I think Beyoncé's persona is pretty darn attractive – even Rachel Stevens thinks she's sexy – but I think her wailing voice never quite resonated with me the way so many other legendary female divas' have. "Crazy in Love" was really the only time I feel like her music ever truly lived up to the hype of her larger than life public image. They're definitely an overrated band, but their sound was at least elegant and emotionally packed. They certainly gave Nickelback a run for their money throughout the 2000s.

I like Arcade Fire, Jack Savoretti, Feist, David Gray and the Scissor Sisters. The rest I couldn't care less about. I lost interest in the chart in 1991.

The Gorillaz are easily my favorite band from the 2000's. I respect your interest in the band, of course, but for me personally, I would consider the Gorillaz to be one of the worst bands of the 2000s. Sorry, but I think they're really overrated, in my opinion.
