So from what I understand, Tik Tok (previously known as music.ally) is currently one of the most popular social media apps, rivaling even Snapchat and Instagram in terms of popularity. However, I personally don't know anything about it at all. It was never popular with people in my grade and i'm generally not one for keeping up to date with the latest technology trends (I don't even have a Snapchat account, lol), so i'm completely out of the loop. Has anyone on here used Tik Tok before? What's it like?

I just downloaded it for...research purposes. So far it reminds me of Vine. At least the musical.ly lip syncing schtick doesn’t seem to be the prominent content. It’s sort of like Instagram videos but with music.
ETA: Lol jk found the lip syncing wasn’t looking in the right spot.

In any case, interesting to hear that it is similar to Vine. It makes you wonder if the increase in popularity of Tik Tok is possibly cannibalising the success of Vine.

I’m gonna have to delete it soon it provides me no amusement. As much as I used to complain about Vine, I have seen some legitimately hilarious compilations. While the best ones were usually accidental, there is something to be said about the comedic skill of being able to utilize only six seconds. (18yo me is giving myself the middle finger right now.) On Tik Tok, the videos feel very intentional and I haven’t found one yet that got me to laugh. It actually seems like a platform that’s better to use with people you know irl. The content basically consists of everyone acting out existing memes, which again is probably cute to watch if they’re your friend. I may try to find some decent users but at least everything recommended is meh.

I have never used Vine or Tik Tok before and i'm only 20. It's good that there's at least some sort of distinction between the content of the two sites. I wonder if Tik Tok is actually advertised or promoted at all from that approach? Maybe that's what the biggest drawcard to the site is; the fact that the site is good to use with people you know personally?

Basically I go through periods of enjoying being obstinate through being out of touch, and being like “enough is enough” lmao. I do think it’s a case of giving people a place to after Vine shuttering, and snapchat lagging. Sort of like everyone going to Facebook ten years ago after MySpace and AIM got passè. I’m gonna standby my notion that TikTok is best used by friends or at least those with similar interests, but apparently there are actual little movements coming out of it? Admittedly I haven’t watched it enough on it yet to notice fashion trends that are any different than anywhere else on the internet, but I’m gonna look out for it. www.dazeddigital.com/fashion/article/45266/1/e-girls-e-boys-tiktok-instagram-fashion-eve-fraser-luis-abad-gen-z-style
