I personally don't think there should be a death penalty. If someone has committed such a horrific crime (i.e murder) and is found to be guilty, they deserve to suffer from it. The death penalty is like an "escape route" for them; they can get killed and don't have to serve an extended period of time in prison for their actions. If there wasn't a death penalty, it may even deter a few people from committing such crimes, because they would know that they would spend the rest of the life locked away in prison, living in awful conditions. What do you think? Should there be a death penalty?

However, it's not as simple as that, in countries like America which have some of the biggest Incarcerated population in the world it would be very costly to have these people imprisoned for the rest of their lives. Let's say most people commit crimes in their 20/30s, that's another 50 years for them to be in prison which is costly enough, but then to do that for every convicted criminal would just mean people's taxes are gonna go up for people to get looked after in jail. I think what's a better solution than both of these sentences is crime prevention and rehabilitation. It's gonna cost a lot less, and it's gonna mean people are less likely to re-offend after committing smaller crimes which often lead to bigger crimes and result in the death penalty.

That's true and I agree with the points you raised. However, with that said, I think rehabilitation is only effective in certain cases. It all depends on the state of the individual, as well as the context of the crime (or crimes) committed. Someone who is in a psychotic mental state and has murdered several people is unlikely to ever be rehabilitated to a healthy condition. I know rehabilitating someone of that calibre would be beneficial in a number of ways (such as freeing up room in prisons), but morally, it is tough on the family and friends of the victims. Someone who has committed such a horrific act should never be given a second chance. By rehabilitating someone like that, you're essentially lessening the seriousness of their prison sentence and the crime they committed. You also risk giving others more of an incentive to commit crimes in that manner, because they know that they will be rehabilitated and given another chance in life.

Yes there jolly well should be unless it is euthanasia or murder in self defence. My cousin was murdered at the age of 29.

No, killing is wrong (except in self-defence) no matter who does it. I also don't like the idea of the state having that kind of power over people. If it deterred crime I'd consider it–but it doesn't, so I don't have to entertain that hypothetical.

Like I mentioned in my original post, I think the death penalty is essentially an "escape route" for perpetrators. With a death penalty, you're reducing their prison sentence, which shouldn't happen.

TBH death is the easy way out. I say bring back the torture chamber, experiment on the feckers. put them through as much and suffering as the victims and their families went through.

it wouldn’t deter them from committing the crime if it was abolished. these mass murderers don’t care what the consequences are
