The Hunger Games (a time capsule of the era)
The Purge
The Maze Runner
Divergent
The Belko Experiment
Has this trend finally died out ?

I hated this so much, they ran it into the ground. I would say it is except Last of Us is the #1 show on HBO but that could be more because its a video game show

It was mostly a mid 10s thing, that Divergent sequel flopping pretty much killed off this genre.
Also i would not group "The Belko Experiment" with those other movies, as far as i know, TBE is not a dystopian movie at all

It was like if the hunger games meets saw. Every body has to kill each other until there’s only one left.

"Dystopian" means it takes place in a "state or society where there is great suffering or injustice", "It was like if the hunger games meets saw. Every body has to kill each other until there’s only one left." what you just described were Battle Royale movies, its a genre in on itself. Hunger Games is a dystopian battle royale, Belko Experiment is a regular battle royale movie, but not dystopian. "Battle Royale" is actually the name of a japanese movie from 2000. Wikipedia says the movie was so popular that the title "Battle Royale" became the name of the genre itself: "The term "battle royale" has since been used to refer to a fictional narrative genre and/or mode of entertainment inspired by the film, where a select group of people are instructed to kill one another until there is a triumphant survivor. The "battle royale" phenomenon became especially popular in the 2010s."

It felt like art was imitating life because of the wave mass shootings that was on the rise from the late 90s.
