This is something that I have noticed and i'm interested to hear other people's opinions on it. For reasons which i'm not sure, Australians tend to prefer UK talent shows over American ones. Britain's Got Talent and The Voice UK: Kids have aired on the main FTA channels in recent times and if i'm not mistaken, they achieved respectable figures (even though they aired during the non-rating period). In contrast, American talent shows are generally only broadcast on FOXTEL. The latest season of American Idol premiered last night, but it didn't even make the Top-20 list of highest-rating programs. Why do you think this is the case?

I tend to not watch any of them when they are om, i will watch some of it on you tube, i think the British kids seem to be more genuine, more sincere about the whole deal,

Not just talent shows, UK over USA in everything for me. Amricans do television badly, nearly worse than Australia. The Brits do everything better. I hardly watch anything American.
I was going to watch American Idol (purely for Katy Perry) but I forgot. There was too much other stuff on anyway. I'm a Celebrity, Bill and Boz, this thing on CMC so not bothered I missed it.

I agree. I'm not sure if you have the same opinion, but I often find American shows to be too "over the top" for my liking. The only current American show I watch on a regular basis is The Walking Dead. I've never been interested in any of the American reality-TV shows.

There would be a lot of American kids who are sincere about the opportunity as well, but it just doesn't really come across that way a lot of the time.

Personally I think one of the best shows currently on TV in the United States is the weekly news-based comedy program "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" which airs over there on HBO, one of their premium cable networks.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand (sort of). With the lacklustre ratings for the return of American Idol on FOX8, I can't imagine Ten wanting to revive a local version of the show anytime soon...

I have to admit any sort of American talent show really bores me. Maybe its to do with the country music in the USA? I find UK talent show far more intriguing (though I may be biased as I know more UK celebrities than American ones).

I find UK talent show far more intriguing (though I may be biased as I know more UK celebrities than American ones). Possibly. Country music is more of a cultural phenomenon over there than it is in both the UK and Australia. Although, I personally think it might just have to do with how American talent shows (and reality-TV shows, in general) are produced. I've noticed that American talent shows are generally more dramatised and sensationalist than UK shows. UK talent shows place more of an emphasis on the singers themselves and not so much on whether they will be eliminated the next week. Personally I think one of the best shows currently on TV in the United States is the weekly news-based comedy program "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" which airs over there on HBO, one of their premium cable networks. I've never watched "Last Week Tonight", so i'm not entirely familiar with the program. I might have to check it out one time. I agree. Although, American talent shows have generally never performed too well on Australian TV. For instance, even when Australian Idol was at the peak of it's popularity back in the Mid 2000s, the American version never achieved similar ratings or had the same level of popularity as the Australian version, despite the fact that it was one of the biggest reality-TV shows over in the United States at the time.

I personally would've thought that country music is more popular in Australia than it is in the UK (I don't think the UK has an equivalent to Nashville or Tamworth, for example), but probably less popular than it is in the US. I've never watched "Last Week Tonight", so i'm not entirely familiar with the program. I might have to check it out one time. Just for what it's worth, that show airs on Foxtel's "The Comedy Channel" here in Australia. Since it's an 11pm Sunday program in the US, due to the time difference (and it being delayed until primetime...I think) we get it on Monday night IIRC.

I agree. What I meant by my original post, was that country music is more popular in America than it is in both the UK and Australia. Going back on topic, from what I understand, American Idol performed abysmally on FOX8. I'm not really surprised by that though, because it received lower ratings in the US as well and based on what I have read, this season of American Idol wasn't as good as previous seasons.
