I was watching this Nine News report from 1990, and the one thing that really stood out for me, was the accents used during the broadcast. It's very much an adaption of a Mid-Atlantic accent. A Mid-Atlantic accent typically refers to a consciously acquired blend of American and British English, as often heard in classic Hollywood movies. For lack of a better term, I use the term to refer to the accents heard in the video above, because the accents used by Peter Hitchener and Hugh Riminton are an intentional blend of the Australian and British accents.
Just out of curiosity, when was this type of accent phased out? Peter Hitchener and Hugh Riminton no longer speak in the same manner as in the video above and they haven't for many years now.

I always thought it was the microphones at the time that made their voices sound like that... lol.
