I was thinking of this earlier and I thought it might be a good idea for a topic. Do your friends have the same taste in music as you? What type of artists/bands do they like? With the exception of two, all of my best/close friends are into rock music and it is their favourite genre of music. However, the best/close friends of mine who like the genre have a bit of a crappy taste in rock music. I'll make a list out of my close friends and their music preferences, to avoid confusion: Friend 1 - Pop-Punk/Emo is their favourite genre of music. Likes bands such as Fall Out Boy, Rise Against, Linkin Park, You Me At Six, 3OH!3, Wolfmother and All Time Low. However, he has a general good knowledge of music, because he is a drummer and he studied music electives throughout high school. Friend 2 - Also really likes Pop-Punk/Emo, but he at least has a more diverse taste in music. Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco are his two favourite bands, but he also particularly likes the Foo Fighters, David Bowie, Queen and Linkin Park. He has a general appreciation of '80s, '90s and 2000s music. As a result, he likes quite a number of hits from those decades. For some reason, he also really likes 2000s-style Post Grunge. I've tried to introduce him to bands such as Bush and The Cranberries, but it has been to no avail. He hardly knows anything about hip-hip/rap. I asked him once to name as many rap songs as he could, and the only one he thought of was "Gangsta's Paradise". Friend 3 - Is a general fan of rock music, however he especially loves Cold Chisel/Jimmy Barnes and Nickelback. I always bag him out for liking Nickelback, because he has 10-15 of their songs on USB and he listens to them almost daily. Friend 4 - Isn't a fan of rock at all. He likes Y2K-Era Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. Basically, he doesn't like any songs that were released before the year 2000. Friend 5. Only ever listens to electronic-music off YouTube. I think he likes 99 Souls; i'm not really familiar with their music. Four of my friends (one of them I didn't mention above, because I only spoke about my close/best friends) believe that music went downhill in 2010. Unsurprisingly, the four of them all like rock music, which is probably why they have that viewpoint. Rock is my favourite genre as well, however I personally believe music declined in overall quality in 2000/2001. I view the Early '60s-Late '90s as being a golden era for music.

Friend 1:
Pretty much exclusively listens to metal and other sub genres of metal, sometimes certain types of rock, I've heard him say he listens to Dream Theater, I honestly don't know that many of his bands off the top of my head, but I've heard a lot of it from him, just checked and Cage of Torment is his most recently listend to artist on Spotify. He has admitted to secretly liking Rihanna and Daniel Powter's "Bad Day", lol.
Friend 2:
It's hard to say any artists or genres in particular he listens to, he just kind of listens to songs. He asked me to check out two of the the Offspring's songs around a month ago, I know he's been obsessed with Melanie Martinez's "Mad Hatter" recently, he said he's not a fan of much rap, but likes some video game rap like JT Music, seems to like some cutesy anime music, and he started listening to Russian Hard Bass music somewhat recently.
Friend 3:
He likes Electro Swing with Jamie Berry being an artist from that genre he listens to, he likes music from the video game series, Fallout (a lot of 30's-50's Jazz music, it's actually pretty great), started getting into deathcore metal a few months ago, listens to a lot of random songs on YouTube, I know he also likes video game rap on YouTube like Friend 2.
Friend 4:
He listens to a lot of hip-hop (including grime music like Stormzy), EDM, pop, and seems to like all genres, he's recommended a lot of music to me and is actually who got me into Kid Cudi, I know he's a fan of Kendrick Lamar, Martin Garrix, Swedish House Mafia, J. Cole, Marshmello, Axwell ^ Ingresso, Stevie Wonder, and really likes the 80's German song, 99 Luftballons, lol. I feel like he would listen to rock, but I'm not aware of who he (if he listens to it) likes from that genre.
Friend 5:
His two favorite genres are country and hip hop, he loves Alan Jackson, 21 Savage, Post Malone, Machine Gun Kelly, Luke Bryan, etc. He seems to prefer modern rap over older types, he likes most new rap he comes across, and was talking about Logic and Lil Yachty's recent albums a week or so ago. I've never heard him talk about older hip hop music, with country, he seems to like a lot of 90's and 2000's country, but also likes a lot ofnew country music, including bro country.

Considering the fact that he is a massive metal fan, it must have really taken a lot of courage for him to admit that he secretly likes Rihanna and "Bad Day".

Haha, very true, he actually sent a private message to my brother and I randomly one day saying he liked Rihanna's music, he ended up leaving the group message before we responded, lol.

One listens to French house, one listens to K-Pop, another listens to only things made before 1971 (except Blank Space by Taylor Swift), and two listen to tons of rap/hip hop (including trap).

That sounds almost obsessive. I guess I can't really say too much (since I really like Grunge/alternative-rock), but it's not as if I have a picture of Kurt Cobain or Eddie Vedder as my phone background.

Yeah, me and my friends give him so much sh*t for it, even though we all like J. Cole, just not as much as him.

BTW, I chose to act out that monologue because that was me at school, because I had a "Who the hell are these dumb and mean bogans around me, and what the hell do I supposedly have in common with them that I somehow have to spend every weekday with them?" attitude to um, everyone else around me.
