I was looking through my photo albums yesterday afternoon and I came across this photo, which I took when I was in Melbourne back in October 2010. Seeing all of those people without smartphones is interesting to see, in retrospect, because it really highlights how life and society have changed over the past eight years. It kind of makes me feel sad, knowing that we will never go back to a time when people weren't so addicted to their mobile devices. Anyway, when do you think smartphones became commonplace? I know a lot of people tend to pinpoint 2010 as the year that smartphones exploded in popularity, but I actually think it occurred in Early/Mid 2011. Heck, even when I started High School back in January 2012, smartphones will still viewed as being some sort of novelty and a lot of the kids on my school bus, would talk about what type of phones they own.

It depends what you mean by common place. If you were talking about when a lot of people started getting them, I would say 2011. However it wasn't until 2013 that they had completly taken over. Even then, back in 2010-2013 if people did have a smartphone it was often some crappy android one, but ever since about 2014 it seems everyone just has an iPhone lol.

I personally think smartphones completely took over around Early 2013, when hashtags and selfies began to become popular.

My mom even had an android back in 2013 and switched to iPhone in 2014.

I say by late 2010 at least from my experience. I remember visiting family in NYC in the summer of 2010 and everyone I saw had a blackberry or an old android phone. When I came back to North Carolina in August everyone at my school had a smartphone or an ipod touch. It depends on where you live, me being from the east coast we tend to be more up to date with technology.

@slowpoke1993 I agree. I think when the iPhone 4s came out back in late 2011 that's when the android vs ios was begun. I remember seeing a ton of people with iphones in my 10th-grade year (2011-2012) whereas a year earlier it was mostly blackberry and classic android phones. Fliphones were pretty obsolete by 2009, but you still had people slider phones at least in my area.

Here's an interesting video. It's a Nine News Sydney report from NYE 2010. Because the report is based on the lead-up to the New Years Eve Sydney fireworks, it shows crowds of people walking around Sydney Harbour. I can only spot one person using a smartphone (at 4:31 in the video). The woman at 1:03 in the video appears to be using a Nokia device, while the man taking a photo at 1:32 is using a digital camera.

I'd say flip phones were "too old" by 2013ish.

2011 is when they became more affordable through prepaid services and also the year I got my first android. 2010 people still had sliders and early versions like Evo with the touch screen and pullout keyboard.
