What is your general opinion of the Disco scene? To the older members of our forum, were you ever interested in any Disco songs at the time?
For me personally, I have a bit of a mixed opinion of Disco music. The Disco scene has never truly appealed to me and some songs are simply too cheesy for me to take much of an interest in them. However, in a general sense, I do find Disco music to be tolerable and I would definitely prefer to listen to a Disco song over any Trap or crunk-rap song.

Disco gives me an old school 70s party style type of vibe. I like it.

1978. Capital Radio. The Best Disco In Town on a Friday night. Who hosted that, Greg someone or other? And your charts were crammed with sould and disco which stood up well against the new wave and general cheesy pop. Greg Edwards, he was who, here's a memory...

There's a fair amount of disco, mostly from the mid-'70s, that I quite enjoy. You could pretty consistently expect quality floor-fillers from the Bee Gees and Earth, Wind & Fire (I don't consider most of ABBA's music disco).
However, a fair amount of it, especially later in the 1970s, is kind of repetitive, with the less funky songs being especially dull. So much of my favourite music is rooted in '70s disco, but I generally prefer drum machines, synthesizers, and a bit of edge over live kits and strings when it comes to dance music. I think disco may also feel a little too vintage for my personal taste in many cases, unlike '80s and '90s dance, which is perfectly retro to me.

While I like some of the early disco songs such as "Love Train" and "Rock Your Baby", for the most part I've always hated disco.

As I mentioned in my original post, i'm not really a fan of Disco and I honestly wouldn't choose to listen to any Disco songs. However, with that said, there are a few songs which I generally don't mind:

Disco deserves more respect than it gets, it was an important and defining genre in many ways. It was an empowering movement for marginalized people back then, especially black people and the LGBT. It's the genre that democratized the use of sex as a theme and to wider audience, more so than Glam Rock did in the same decade, with a lot of Disco hits being unapologeticly very sexy . It was the genre that popularized the use of synths, which will be defining in the births of Post-Punk, New Wave and Synth Pop. And yeah, Hip Hop and EDM both straight up come from the Disco scene as well.

I think it's simply because many people perceive it as being flamboyant, manufactured music which saturated the Top-40 charts for a considerable amount of years. I'm not sure if it really has much to do with the music itself, to be honest. The backlash that stemmed from Disco's popularity in the Late '70s, has naturally resulted in people developing a prejudice against the genre over time and this has undoubtedly influenced the way in which Disco is remembered.

People hating it are mostly close-minded rockists and elitist music snobs. Most people still like it or at least don't mind it as it is generally well remembered for its silliness and cheesiness (it's just that its legacy is either understated or completely ignored about). It also represented a lot to a lot of people, especially marginalized ones back then. It offered them escapism and excitement in a generally bleak time.

I have some disco favourites but, to be perfectly frank, disco sucks! It is boring.

I've been kind of obsessed with Earth, Wind & Fire lately. Their songs do in fact really groove!
