I'm extremely critical of the lyrics to "2002" because they focus way too much on Y2K-era teen pop, with references not just to "Baby One More Time", but "Bye Bye Bye" as well. I very distinctly remember that in contrast to 1999-2001, when music like that was ubiquitous, teen pop was unbelievably unpopular in 2002, with several of its major acts maturing or breaking up, while artists like Avril Lavigne took centre stage instead. While Nelly was huge in 2002, "Ride with Me" was his big hit in 2001, in contrast to "Hot in Herre" and "Dilemma" defining '02. I'll give Anne-Marie credit that maybe those just were the songs she grew up with as a kid in 2002, but as somebody who was very much aware of popular music that year, I can definitely say that "2002" is a terribly inaccurate portrait of what the year was actually like, and that "2001" would have made far more sense. I really like the song, but I agree it seems to describe 2000 or 2001. By 2002, most of that stuff wasn't popular anymore. The song also has a reference to "The Next Episode" by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, a song that was very popular in the summer of 2000. The artist is actually from the UK, where that trend lasted past 2001....

At least that is what I've noticed from reading posts on inthe00s.

Steps broke up in early 2002, S Club 7 saw much less popularity after Paul left and trends were evolving, and otherwise Britain was pretty much focused primarily on either alternative, trance, or Timbaland/Neptunes/Murder Inc.-oriented pop. The Max Martin pop sound was very passé by 2002. Even S Club’s Seeing Double album is much more experimental and electronically oriented than the more conventionally Y2K-ish stuff they released prior.

Electronic music was much bigger in the 2000s in Britain and especially in mainland Europe compared to the U.S. Homophobia and cultural conservatism kind of killed EDM in the US during the 2000s (it had been popular in the 90s). I remember the mid 2000s. It was rare that you listened to electronic music unless you were either gay, on drugs, or a geek. It wasn't until the late 2000s that it started to become more popular again in the mainstream.

I was born in 2002. If I had a dollar for every person born in 2002 here, I would make more money in a day than Google does in a year.
