I heard Anne Marie's new song, "2002", on the radio for the first time earlier today. For anyone who hasn't listened to it, the song is a nostalgic reflection of the year 2002 and as a result, the lyrics contain several references to Early 2000s pop culture. Anyway, listening to the song inspired me to create a thread based on the year. What were your experiences of 2002 like? If you were too young to remember the year or you weren't alive at the time, do you wish you could have experienced the year?
I was three years old in 2002. My memories of 2002 are mostly vague, however I can remember some things quite clearly. Instead of typing up a long paragraph about what the year was like for me, i'm going to describe it in dot points: * My Grandad built me a cubby house that year. It was actually quite big and it even had a slide at one end of it! You can see half of it in this picture. * Playing the PS1 was one of my favourite pastimes. My favourite games were "Stuart Little 2", "World's Scariest Police Chases" and "Runabout 2". With only being three at the time, my Mum had to set the console up for me each time I wanted to play it. * I had a spiritual experience one night at my Dad's house. There was a spirit of a little boy who was haunting the place at the time. My Dad and his ex-partner had several encounters with him during the time that my Dad lived there in the Early 2000's. About twenty minutes after I went to bed one night, I was just laying in bed and I happened to saw my bedroom door creep open. It wasn't caused by any draft/wind, because my bedroom window was closed and so were the windows in the other rooms. * There was an ad that aired on TV which showed a man trying to climb a brick wall (now that I think about it, it may have even been some sort of trailer for Spider-Man) and I used to try to imitate it by trying to climb up one of my bedroom walls. I wish I could remember what the ad was for. * I started to become aware of contemporary Top-40 music in Late 2002. At that time, I also started to take an interest in Hybrid Theory and my interest in Linkin Park was only consolidated when Meteora was released just two weeks after my 4th birthday, which was back in March 2003. * As shown in the link I shared earlier, I got a trampoline that year as well. The trampoline I had would be deemed unsafe by current standards, because it did not have safety nets.

2002 is actually the first year I can remember, obviously not crystal clear though. From a 2018 perspective its so dated, but what a great year for pop culture!

I'm extremely critical of the lyrics to "2002" because they focus way too much on Y2K-era teen pop, with references not just to "Baby One More Time", but "Bye Bye Bye" as well. I very distinctly remember that in contrast to 1999-2001, when music like that was ubiquitous, teen pop was unbelievably unpopular in 2002, with several of its major acts maturing or breaking up, while artists like Avril Lavigne took centre stage instead. While Nelly was huge in 2002, "Ride with Me" was his big hit in 2001, in contrast to "Hot in Herre" and "Dilemma" defining '02.
I'll give Anne-Marie credit that maybe those just were the songs she grew up with as a kid in 2002, but as somebody who was very much aware of popular music that year, I can definitely say that "2002" is a terribly inaccurate portrait of what the year was actually like, and that "2001" would have made far more sense.

I don't think the song is about pop culture from 2002, I think it's just mainly about her personal life in the summer of 2002. The part in which I was confused about was that none of the actual song references she put in the song were from 2002. I mean, with a song titled "2002" you'd at least expect one of the songs to be from 2002. (Unless I'm mistaken here)

(Unless I'm mistaken here) Yeah exactly, that may have been what her own personal life was in 2002, but it's definitely not a proper representation of 2002 as a whole. Avril Lavigne was the biggest thing in music, and she was specifically touted as the anti-Britney Spears.

Yeah, the first thing I thought when I heard it was how none of those songs are actually form 2002 .

Not sure if you feel the same way about the year, but I wish I could have experienced 2002 (and the Early 2000s, in general) at an older age. My memories of 2002 are consistent enough for me to have a general view of what the year was like, however I was too young to truly take in the pop culture and what was going on around me.

I was 4 for the near entirety of 2002, until December. It's the first year where my memories span the entire year, 2001 I only remember June-December of that year, and 2000 backwards I really don't remember anything. My memories of 2002 are clearer than 2001, but still not as crystal clear as 2003+ is for me. Most of my memories of that year are of course related to preschool media, like Blues Clues, Winnie the Pooh, etc. I remember playing the Humongous Entertainment PC games a lot with my two older sisters and my cousin that year. My favorites were Freddi Fish, Pajama Sam, and Blue's Birthday Bash, I played those a lot. It was also in 2002 when I played Banjo Tooie for the first time, as a rental from Hollywood Video. My sister would also let me use her Game Boy Color to play Pokemon Pinball. I also used to go to my sisters soccer and roller skating games a lot back then. I remember always getting cotton candy at the roller skating rink, that was my favorite part of going there. I also have a lot of early childhood nostalgia for the music that was popular around that time as well.
I do agree with #Infinity that this song is not too good of a portrait of what 2002 was like. I honestly think the artist of this song should've chosen 2001 instead of 2002 to make a song about, not only was 2001 the tail-end for the Y2K teen pop era which had large part in the subject matter of her song, but also 2001 would've been a far more interesting year for her to cover due to 9/11 and the atmosphere following it.

Just out of curiosity, what songs from 2002 make you feel nostalgic? I only have nostalgia for certain songs that were popular towards the end of the year, such as "Sk8er Boi", "Dilemma", "A Little Less Conversation" and "No One Knows". Yeah, I would have to agree that "2002" is not an accurate reflection of what 2002 was like. The only reason why I mentioned in my original post, is because it gave me the idea to create a thread based on everyone's experiences of the year.

How does 9/11 affect a song released in 2018, it shouldn't be a good thing.

I really like the song, but I agree it seems to describe 2000 or 2001. By 2002, most of that stuff wasn't popular anymore. The song also has a reference to "The Next Episode" by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, a song that was very popular in the summer of 2000.
