Last Monday marked 9 years since Michael Jackson passed away. I can't believe it was that long ago, because I can still remember the moment when I found out about it. I woke up at 8:30am and as soon as I turned the TV on in the loungeroom, there was a report airing on Today about his passing. Anyway, the anniversary of Michael Jackson's passing inspired me to create this thread. What news events of significance can you remember? Here are a few that I have memories of: * 9/11 Coverage on the morning of the 12th September. I have very vague memories of watching Channel Ten's coverage of the attacks. * The Bali Bombings in Late 2002. My Mum actually went on a holiday to Bali just two years later and I can remember not wanting her to go, because of the attacks. * The 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. I have vivid memories of seeing the coverage on TV. * 2005 Cronulla Riots. * The announcement that Pluto had been re-classified as a "dwarf planet". This was significant for me, because I became interested in astronomy around that time. * Steve Irwin's and Peter Brock's deaths. * In the days immediately after Steve Irwin's passing, I remember seeing a report about 20 sting-rays that had been found on a Queensland beach with their tails cut-off. * A news report sometime in Late 2006 about a South Park episode which mocked Steve Irwin's death. * Kevin '07. * Kevin Rudd becoming the Prime Minister of Australia. * The Stolen Generation speech. There's plenty more news events from more recent times that I can remember (such as Donald Trump's election victory), but I don't want to type a massive page of examples.

Interesting to hear that you can remember 9/11. If you don't mind me asking, what is your memory of it? I can only vaguely remember seeing a snippet of the coverage on the morning of the 12th September.
