This song from late 2018 sounds like it belongs in the early 2010s:

To anyone else, does this sound very 60s for a song released in 1958? The heavily distorted guitar is way ahead of any of the rock and roll records popular at the time.

A lot of J-pop stylistically lags behind Western pop, since the influences only start to infiltrate the country gradually, but the example below is a particularly extreme example. It came out in 1997, but it sounds much more like something you'd hear in 1987, resembling INXS' Kick album, for example. I also could sort of imagine it as an "'80s holdover" track from 1990, but certainly for the most part, songs this retro were pretty archaic by 1997.

Released: 2008 Sounds: 2003 Released: 2006 Sounds: 2002 The former seems safely late 2000s, in fact I think you could release it in 2010 and it wouldn't be dated. Latter is also pretty 2006 to me, don't really get it being more 2002.

Released: 1987
Sounds: 2000?
Not exactly sure where I would place it, but this is so ahead of its time for '87 and this is one of the biggest hits of that year!

Released: 1987 Sounds: 2000? Not exactly sure where I would place it, but this is so ahead of its time for '87 and this is one of the biggest hits of that year! You can say that about a lot of U2 songs from that decade. This is a better example, being from 1983.

I’ve always felt that early u2 was a cross between post punk, pop/rock and jangly mid 80s alternative. I think the 87 singles stick out more like pop oriented alternative rock.

I do agree that The Joshua Tree in 1987 has a slightly different sound than earlier U2 records, but I wouldn't necesserilly call it "alternative rock". Achtung Baby in 1991 is really where U2 made the full transition into an alternative rock band.

Alternative rock and jangle pop was well established by the mid 80s. It’s a different wave than the later alternative.
