Personally, I would say more 1986 or 1987 as a whole. I feel like similar mid 80s cheese pop was there for a good chunk of 1988, but the year is more notable for for things like acid house and a newer sound in music imo. Well 1988 is only one year's difference from 1987, and the two years aren't that different in terms of pop culture. 1989 on the other hand was definitely distinct, and is arguably the ending of the 80s zeitgeist. The second half of 1988 was increasingly getting closer to 1989-1991 quite different than 1986-1987 and 1987-1988, which more was more stereotypical 80s despite some changes in late 87.

I edited my comment in the time since you replied saying just that.

I do agree pop culture slightly changed in late 1987. But what is it you would describe exactly as having changed?

A multitude of things (fashion, toys, cartoons, music, aesthetic design etc) start slowly looking much closer to the start of the 90s (late 89 to 91) and less mid 80s by mid to late 1988, even though it is still not 100 percent there. In terms of music all you have to look at is hip hop (NWA, Public Enemy, EPMD, Rob Base), alt rock (jane's addiction, sonic youth, pixies, stone roses), and house music ( acid house and popular house hits) and a number of pop and new jack swing hits which feel closer to the 90s, or just a new era in general, significantly more than any point in 1987.

I meant in regards to what you thought changed in late 1987. Nonetheless, if you're referring to late 1988-1989, I agree with all those points with one exception being fashion. I think fashion stayed solidly 80s well until late 1991-1992 with big hair, neon colors, and slouch socks remaining dominant all throughout those years.

What changed in late 1987? just a preview and some changes/shifts of whatever became full force mid to late 1988 and 1989. I have a thread on late 1987 somewhere. 1986-1987 only had pieces. In terms of fashion, I was young and remember a lot: late 1987 Still largely typical 80s but few changes start seeing more straight, big curls, or hair flip hair,in females. Circular glasses, zig zag pattern designs and free flowing hair, slightly looser jeans, early curtained , hi top fades, long straight hair in males. 1988: Same but start seeing the more and more of the same and more 1989-1991 style looks. 1989-1990: 90s fashion is leading the way with some late 80s influences and styles co existing at the same time 1990-1991: Backwards baseball caps, flannel, baggy jeans, grunge fashion before grrunge and stereotypical 90s clothing is there to a good extent Lets get back on topic...

Released: 1971

This was a big hit in 1971 UK apparently. This song is such an obnoxious earworm.
