There is a documentary airing on TV at the moment about the Centennial Park bombing which occurred during the Atlanta 1996 Olympics. It got me thinking about what it would have been like to live during 1996 and how different the world was in comparison to today. Anyway, one of the things I thought about was the development of the internet over time. Back in 1996, most households still did not have access to the internet at home, which is what inspired me to create a thread based on this topic. Could you live in a world without the internet? I'm going to be honest, I would find it very hard to live in a world without the internet. I've never lived during a time without the World Wide Web (sorry if that makes anyone feel old ). Even though I only used the internet on the odd occasion when I was a kid, at least it was always available if I ever had to use it for finding information or just general web browsing. I can get by with not using the internet for a while, but i'm not sure how I would go if the internet didn't exist at all.

A lot of my school work was on the Internet, so probably not. Also, I'd be bored as hell without it.

I'm not sure. I have lived most of my life without the Internet (I'm a lot older than most of you!) so it wouldn't be as bad as if I had grown up with it. On the other hand, it would be, as you guys said, boring because now that I have discovered it, I wouldn't want to be without it.

Everyone has become too reliant on the internet to fulfill their needs in day-to-day life.

Absolutely. Everyone survived without it in the eighties. People wrote letters by hand on Basildon Bond notepaper, sometimes pictorial, or on typewriters. Our children now are using search engines to learn what a typewriter is, or was.
Families actually sat down at tables as a unit to eat dinner and interacted with each other. There were four television channels and there was no Jeremy Kyle.
I had a Spirograph and an Etch a Sketch and had fun with Slime (still available in a toy shop in Swanage I see).
Pornography, which in my opinion has no place on the internet. was derived from Escorts and Knaves found under your mates parent's beds.
The problem with the internet is that while such a fantastic invention and educational tool, it is widely misused by people who can take advantage of the anonymity offered despite there being digital footprints left behind.
I read someone's opinion somewhere that the internet endangers our world and that either it or religion will culminate in the demise of our planet.
I'm not certain that isn't a little extreme but you can see why someone might think that.

Yeah, I could. My whole state (South Australia) had a 24 hour blackout in September 2016 and I survived comfortably. Having no power annoys me more.

A world where Alexa doesn't tell me who the 34th president of the United States is when I only asked her to put pretzels on the shopping list? Sign me up. Jokes aside though it would be hard for me because I am very dependent on the internet. I take it for granted sometimes but having access to so much information instantly is so helpful in so many scenarios, but I feel I could adapt to a world without it if I had to. I would especially miss the amazing friends that I have online.

I voted I'm not sure, because the Internet is pretty much a part of my life now, but I'd lived most of my childhood without using it at all and I'm adaptable ... I wouldn't like to live without the Internet because I do a lot of things with it (basically all my work is done through the Internet, and I can use it to get things like sound libraries and stock textures that it would have taken me a lifetime to get otherwise), but if I was in a world without Internet, I'm sure I would find other things to do.

I was just thinking about this topic earlier this afternoon. Last weekend, we had a power blackout in the evening which lasted for about 3.5 hours, which meant that we couldn't use the internet, watch TV or any items which required electricity. Even though it felt like a huge inconvenience not being able to use electricity, I actually found it strangely enjoyable. It felt good to completely disconnect from electrical devices and bond more with other people.
In a way, I actually wish I could have experienced a pre-Internet world. I just get the impression that everyone felt more connected with one another and life was filled with unexpected discoveries.

That's how I felt too when we lost electricity for two days following an ice storm a few years back. Without any electronics to provide entertainment, we had to rely on each other. I played shadow puppets with my family and we played crosswords and charades together. It was a good time to bond. It did get cold at night though and I had to wear a jacket to bed, so I still appreciate electricity
