Earlier today, I decided to check out the MLS All Stars vs Juventus match which was broadcast live on ESPN. I'm not interested in American sport and hence, I never watch ESPN, but there was nothing else on TV at the time and I thought it would be interesting to get more of a perspective on what the American media is like. Here are a few things I observed:
* Hip-Hop/Trap beats are used for station promos, which I thought was quite interesting. Here in Australia, our television networks generally use free-licenced tracks or Top-40 songs for promoting upcoming shows. Pretty much all of the ESPN promos had hip-hop backing tracks.
* The presenters/commentators on ESPN's coverage were so over the top. It's actually a trend I've noticed on a lot of American talk-shows and sports-broadcasts. Why do American presenters feel the need to talk and yell over the top of each other? One commentator even said "OMG, OMG" when an MLS player was close to scoring a goal. It was just so unprofessional and I actually stopped watching the match after five minutes, because I couldn't stand listening to those presenters any longer.
* During the pre-match coverage, an ESPN commentator briefly interviewed a Mexican player who had only recently signed with an MLS club. The interview was a complete farce. The commentator turned the interview into a discussion about the NBA, even going to the extent of asking the Mexican player if he plans on attending LA Lakers matches in the next few weeks. How pathetic is that?! I guess it just reinforces soccer's position in the American sports market.
