Isn't 2013 when music went from dance pop to indie? I remember when I heard Royals by Lorde it felt like we were in another decade. And Blurred Lines sounded so different than pop songs from before. Yeah, I know. 2010-2012 was quite weird, at least for me. It's like it became more and more late 2000s and then died completely in 2013. 2013 was really the first core 10s year. Maybe 2022-2024 will be the start of core 2020s culture

Indie had already been popular in the mainstream for several years prior to 2013 though, especially in parts of Europe and Oceania. "Pumped Up Kicks" and "Somebody That I Used To Know", both indie-rock songs, were one of the biggest hits of 2011. Welcome to the forum, by the way!

Okay so maybe that line was bullshit, however I still believe that 2010-2012 had late 2000s influences, and then they all went away for good after that.

Okay so maybe that line was bullshit, however I still believe that 2010-2012 had late 2000s influences, and then they all went away for good after that. Here's one of my more unpopular opinions, but the core 2010's is not the same as the mid 2010's. Early 2010's: May 1, 2011 - August 26, 2013 (from the death of Osama Bin Laden to Miley's infamous twerking moment at the 2013 VMA) Mid 2010's: August 26, 2013 - November 8, 2016 (from the time when Miley Cyrus twerked in the VMAs to the time of the 2016 election) Core 2010's: January 24, 2013 - February 14, 2018 (from Vine's creation to the time of the Parkland shooting) Late 2010's: November 8, 2016 - present (since Trump's victory in the 2016 election) The core 2010's, in my opinion, lasted from 2013 to 2017. 2013 was more early 2010's politically, but probably split evenly between early 2010's and mid 2010's culturally. 2014-2016 were mid 2010's politically and culturally. 2017 was split evenly between mid 2010's and late 2010's politically, but probably more late 2010's culturally. September 11, 2001 to April 30, 2003: Cultural Early 2000s May 1, 2003 to May 31, 2007: Cultural Mid 2000s June 2007 to October 2008: Cultural Late 2000s (release of the iPhone, recession, Writer's Strike, 7th gen gaming) November 2008 to March 2010: Late 00s/Early 10s transition (Obama elected, HDTV the norm) April 2010 to December 2012: Early 2010s with late 2000s leftovers (iPad, smartphone sales beat PC, MLP, Google+) January 2013 to October 2016: Mid 2010s with a couple of early 2010s influences, all 00s influences practically dead (Vine, PS4, 90s nostalgia, Harlem Shake, twerking, FNAF) November 2016 and after: Late 2010s with many mid 10s influences (Trump, Fortnite, dab, Fidget Spinners, PUBG)

Why is the mid 2000s so long and also what happened on May 1st 2003? January 2003 to April 2003 is mathematically early 00s Obviously, but all the other cut-offs seemed arbitrary or based off cultural transitions so I was wondering why you would single out May 1st 2003.

I agree. I honestly think the shift occurred during the final quarter of 2012, but by summer 2013 it had undoubtedly happened. 2013 also set up a culture that seemed to drag on forever. It wasn't until 2017 that things really started to move on from what 2013 set up. We are now distant enough from 2013 and the culture that it spawned that I am able to look at it with a little more perspective. Mid '10s nostalgia will always be a tricky subject for me. I do have a little nostalgia for it but that is more for my youth and the fact that I wish that I would have been able to spend those years differently. I would never want to return there. Fall 2012 through about half way through 2017 was the darkest era of my life, with 2014 being the worst year.

I was thinking about it lately, but one thing that stands out to me about 2013 is how big the 'Progressive House craze' was back then. I had a bunch of friends in High School that were especially into the 'Big Room House' genre: It's honestly quite unfortunate that Progressive House isn't popular anymore as it is a very promising genre for pop-fusions and made a few iconic hits while it lasted:
