Are there any songs you guys have experienced coming back into popularity for a period of time? And perhaps gaining far more recognition than they had at the time of their release.
Often this is due to a song or arist being featured in a current piece of pop culture.
“Don’t Stop Believin” became a very popular song among my age group in the late 00’s. It was played at school functions, sang in productions, etc. Otherwise, there weren’t any other 80’s power ballads I knew a lot of 12yos into. I was actually unfamiliar with the song prior, yet it seemed to be everywhere overnight. I can only remember hearing it in Family Guy around 2007. Gravity Falls parodied the song a few years ago, painting it as the ubiquitous 1980’s karaoke song.
For the past year “Don’t Stop Me” (I know I know, almost the same as the last title) has been everywhere. I remember at some point last year listening to it during workouts, after which it would be stuck in my head, and telling my mom about it. To my surprise, the child of the 70’s, was unfamiliar with this Queen song. Then I began hearing it more, at a wedding, at a karaoke bar. Earlier this year it was used in a car commercial. Now with the release of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and it playing in many of its commercials, the song is just everywhere.
Are there any songs or artists you guys have in mind and any particular later time period you tie them to?

Here are a few I can think of: Australia reacted pretty strongly to the news that Dolores O'Riordan had tragically passed away. I remember it was even one of the biggest news reports on all of the major news bulletins. In response, "Zombie" started to receive much more regular airplay on radio stations and it's airplay increased one Bad Wolves' cover was released, which became a big hit in it's own right. "Untitled" briefly became a bit of a meme when I was in Year 10 (this was back in 2015). I remember kids in my year group would mock the lyrics to the song and make fun of the wimpy chorus. This is considered to be an unofficial anthem here in Australia. "The Horses" was a #1 hit here back in 1991 and it's generally held in very high regard. In regards to the topic, "The Horses" has re-surged in popularity over the past 12-18 months, because it has become a bit of a meme on social media (not sure why, tbh) and a new generation of listeners have been introduced to the song. Daryl Braithwaite still performs across the country regularly and "The Horses" has become a staple of all of his concerts.

While this song is overwhelmingly associated with Shrek, it was already a huge Billboard hit in 1999, two years before the movie came out. In fact, I already recognized the track from the radio, even though I was still hardly exposed to pop music at the time.
“Stand By Me” was already a major hit in America back in 1961, but it didn’t become a landmark classic with lots of international popularity until the Stephen King movie of the same name was released a quarter of a century later. It’s now probably the single most-recognized song of the early 1960s aside from Elvis’ “Can’t Help Falling in Love”.

After becoming a #1 hit in 1996, this R&B classic reached a new generation in 2012 when not only was it covered by indie folk singer Chet Faker, but also featured in Pitch Perfect. Both covers transformed the track into something completely different from the ultra-funky, hard-edged original.

I would say these two are the most famous examples due to internet memes:

Paul McCartney's "Jet" appears to be making a bit of a resurgence here. I heard the song on the radio for the first time in years just a couple of days ago and FOX Sports just used the song for a cricket promo a few minutes ago.

That song had another resurgence in popularity in 2017 thanks to various memes being made about it.

A more recent example would be this This song has since been turned into a meme on TikTok in 2021 thanks to, of all things, a DeviantArt Mordecai/Twilight Sparkle shipping. Yeah...

This was back in the mid 2010s when making fun of angsty 2000s culture was at its height. This song was also mocked back then

Biggest example I can think of would be this This came out during the electropop era (as you can definitely tell) in 2009, but NOBODY gave a shit about it when it first came out. It was only a somewhat popular song in Australia, where it came from, but that was it. But then, in 2017, this song became very big thanks to memes made about the song.
