In light of the recent copyright infringements, I thought it would be worthwhile to create a thread based on discussing media-based YouTube channels and what the future has in store for them. What do you have planned for your channel?
As for myself, I've already uploaded 68 videos onto my Archive Page and i'm hoping to upload another 30-40 videos today. It will be a gradual transition from YouTube over to Archive.Org.

What are you doing with your YT? I'll still upload content onto my YouTube channel on an occasional basis, but my uploads will gradually decrease over time. I'd say that by Early-Mid 2020 (or possibly earlier than that), i'll probably be uploading all of my content exclusively on Archive.Org.

I created an archive account the other day but I’m still unsure if I’ll be using it just yet. I do wonder how long it will be before other contributors like us start to migrate over, just give up their interest altogether or find other alternatives when they start getting constantly issued strikes.

That's fair enough. I can understand how the thought of having to re-upload all of your YouTube videos would be off-putting, as it's pretty time consuming and just inconvenient in general. It's up to you anyway. I've actually had my Archive.Org account for over three years, but up until now, I hadn't really used it for anything. I've always known that there was a real possibility that something like this could happen, which is why I decided to create the page back in 2015. To be honest, I actually tend to think that the deletion of @sydneycitytv 's account will be the final nail in the coffin for media enthusiasts continuing to archive their content onto YouTube. It has completely changed the way we go about things. As it's been touched upon on several occasions, we've all known for quite a while now that Seven isn't supportive of third-party content, so the recent development of Nine beginning to crack down on content has essentially resulted in our channels becoming redundant. I get the feeling that very few people will move over to Archive.Org, which is a real shame. This has crossed my mind a few times, but I've even thought about potentially archiving/downloading some YouTube videos from channels that have decided not to migrate over to Archive.Org. If their YouTube channel is deleted for whatever reason, the content could potentially be lost forever. At least there would be a copy of the recording and the original uploader could be credited for the video.

The thought of my 600 or so uploads is bad enough.

I understand copyrights needed to be protected, but, what they're doing is a bit extreme, luckily, I don't have to deal with these problems. Article 13 could affect YouTube as well.

I privatised all of them. I didn't want to risk Nine or Seven issuing me with a copyright strike while i'm offline.

It's here: archive.org/details/@southcoast_tvJust out of curiosity, what are you planning on doing with your channel?

Well I might privatise Nine and Seven videos, but will probably keep Ten, ABC, SBS, etc. I don't plan on closing my channel, but may restrict myself from uploading more recent content, since that may be why Nine and Seven are targeting YT channels (but we don't know that for sure). I have already deleted 30+ videos from my channel that have copyright infringement just for a little extra precaution. And eventually I will possibly upload my vids to archive.org. What do you think about Vimeo or Dailymotion? They're definitely not as popular as YT, but I don't think they copyright videos.

To be honest, i'm not sure if they're doing it simply because we're continuing to upload new content. I'd say that they've been aware of our channels for quite some time and for whatever reason, they have now decided to crack down on third-party content. I know that Seven and Nine are aware of the existence of South Coast TV, because I have received copyright claims from Nine for some of my videos before (I have never got a strike though) and Seven have used a couple of my videos on Seven News on two occasions. I've never used Vimeo before, although I do have an account on Dailymotion. I personally wouldn't recommend either website though. With Vimeo, I believe you need to pay a subscription fee to sign up and use their services, which isn't really worth it IMO. I have considered creating an account on Vimeo before, but the fact that you have to pay to use the site turned me off. In regards to Dailymotion, videos can be copyrighted and your account can be terminated if you have infringed copyright on multiple occasions. The FTA Networks would likely be aware of Dailymotion. Even though it's not as popular as YouTube, they would still monitor the site and try to target channels that are uploading their content.

I've removed over 400 videos (mainly content from 2012-18) which could be the ones that Nine are more concerned about having online.

The decision to close SydneyCityTV Videos for good wasn't one that was taken lightly. But with Seven & Nine having a dim view of their content being hosted on YouTube channels other than their own and the thought that Ten might follow suit in the future, I figured that it wasn't worth continuing and that interest in the type of YouTube channel I did would've tanked if I was eventually restricted to ABC/SBS and maybe community TV content (with nothing against those broadcasters of course). And yes, I did consider the possibility of other platforms but decided in the end that it was best not to put any major copyright concerns on them.
Personally I'd like to return to this sort of thing in the future with the full co-operation of all broadcasters but since that's highly unlikely to ever happen, instead I'm probably going to take the closure of SydneyCityTV Videos as an opportunity to take my interest in the Australian media landscape in a different direction to the one you've been used to because to remain relevant, I must be willing to evolve and embrace change!
