I know some of you may be too young to remember, however a few people here @slowpoke & maybe al may remember this era as I saw it, the era known as the Ps2 mass hysteria era. I don't think any console will match the hype this system had. It was getting name dropped in songs on the radio. When the console dropped in 2000 there we riots and mass ebay sellers for the first time selling the system for 3K, hype for the ps2 was at an ALL TIME HIGH once GTA 3 dropped, it was in the news and on radio broadcasts every day. The fact that this system was a DVD player really made it futuristic, it was really a wrap for nintendo once u had FFX and GTA 3 and MGS 2 all coming at once. It was prob the highest point in video game history.

I remember it being a pretty hot item when it came out but that's about it. Even well into the 00's though, it remained the console of choice. The fact that it was also a DVD player is a huge point that often gets overlooked, as many parents were able to justify getting their kid one, seeing it as multi-use device.

Yeah most of us in here would've been too young to remember the ps2 hype. I do remember the Gamecube and Xbox being new tho but barely. My family was still playing the ps1 at the time I didn't know about the ps2 till like 2002 ish but even then the ps1 ruled our household till about 2004 when my mom bought me and brother a Gamecube. My brother did get a ps2 in Christmas 2005 however. One of my cousins did own a Dreamcast tho.

I was only a year old when the Playstation 2 was released, so I personally don't have any memories of the hype surrounding it's launch. Like what has already been said though, the PS2 was still hugely popular for the rest of the 2000s and even at the turn of this decade. I remember EB Games (at least here in Australia anyway) only stopped selling PS2 consoles/games back in 2013.

Yeah if this thread was on in the00s it would be a buttload of people talking about the ps2 hype. From what I heard it wasn't till mid-2001 when the ps2 recovered from the shortage issue. 2002 was the year the system really took off.

That shortage issue was lame as hell tho you could only really play it at Best Buy. My first time playing the system was in Fall 2001 when The Mummy Returns game launched.

I remember the hype. My cousin sold his N64 and games for a PS2 and I was furious because we couldn't share games anymore.

I remember after No Mercy came out it was a wrap for n64.

Agreed with the second statement. That's genuinely the only reason why most people got the PS2 during the first few years since it had that feature and not necessarily the games. I was only a year old when the PlayStation 2 was released, so I personally don't have any memories of the hype surrounding it's launch. Before that, The N64, PS1 and the Dreamcast still reigned supreme.
