I still consider 2008 and 2009 00s despite both having 10s influences (2009 even more so). Just like people say late 98 was where the 90s ended even though 99 still had a very late 90s feel, but nonetheless (not trying to start another decadeology debate) I've warmed up to the late 00s over time. The late 00s definitely is what caused a huge 00s backlash on the internet in the early-mid 10s. I like 2007 and 08 to some degree but 2009 was when I felt everything I loved from my childhood died. I thought I wouldn't be super nostalgic that era but ever since 2016 I been bumping tons of rap songs from 08-09.

Even the mid-00s took a while for people warm up to.

The Mid 2000s still don't seem to be as revered as what the other eras of the decade are though. You'll see a lot of '00s babies on YouTube videos being vocal about not having been old enough to experience the Late 2000s, but very rarely do you see anyone wishing that they could have experienced 2004-2006 at an older age.

Well I'll tell you why I think the late '00s are superior to the earlier part of the decade: optimism. The Iraq War had started going south really quick, people were getting sick of Bush, and it seemed as a culture as if we were finally like, "Alright, we fucked up. Let's make this better." We voted in the largest Democratic House majority in decades, we got Obama, it seemed like we were going to have this generation's FDR.
And it started being reflected in our media too: movies like Wall-E and Speed Racer bringing back some of that plucky populism, music started getting cheerier despite the Recession, and we got an environmental TV station for Pete's sake. It seemed like we were headed toward a promising time, and in terms of the decade as a whole it felt like finally reaching the light at the end of the tunnel.
Oh, also the video games of 2008 and 2009 were pretty rad.

Oh, also the video games of 2008 and 2009 were pretty rad. I see where you are coming from, however we had a recession from Summer 2001 going thru 9/11 and still the pop culture was more upbeat for some reason (despite teen pop transitioning into a more neptunes type production) Around the time 2002 hit things started getting semi campy, you had Hulk Hogan coming back to the WWF, 80s pop culture making a comeback (VH1 shows + That 80s show) Vice City. On top of that people were United for a little bit (even tho there was islamphobia at the time) I think that oh shit we fucked up feeling came around 2007/2008 when we needed Bush out and the Economy came crashing down, The 2000s culture was long in the tooth by 2008 and we needed a change. 2008 def did have some optimism at the end with Obama getting elected going into 2009. 2009 was filled with empty mall stores and things going out of bussiness while music was getting more upbeat, it was a weird feeling, a little upbeat but a little confusing so I can't say it was 100% positively upbeat. Most music you heard in 2009 was already being made in 2008 before the crash even happened, music was going to be Electropop (some of it was) before the crash late into 2008.

The early 00s is the clear winner since I rarely hear anyone mentions mid and late 00s but the mid 00s was more modern and planted seeds to the modern internet.

From my perception, the times felt pretty "dark" until we got towards the end of 09. People didn't just wind down overnight, and the bad economy was still taking its toll moving into 10. By that summer once "California Gurls" was a huge hit, that's when I felt we had finally completed the "cheerier" transformation.
As for the early 00's feeling upbeat despite 9/11/war/economic downturn, I relate it to the feeling of camaraderie there was (at least in the US) at the time. Everyone was angry at a common enemy instead of at each other. Once the initial horror blew over, there was a ra-ra "WE ARE EFFIN AWESOME" vibe for a while.

My last year of college. I had a lot of optimism for the future, but of course the economy would tank a few weeks later. I recall that John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential candidate that month, which was a big story. I had a construction job and made a good bit of money. I've actually noticed a good bit more nostalgia for this era over these last few years.
