Is EDM really not a thing anymore? I don’t know, I’m not hip.

Is EDM really not a thing anymore? I don’t know, I’m not hip. It's still a thing but it isn't what it was in 2014. I'd love to see the genre return to what it was in the 2000s and early 2010s.

Ehh, I'd give Electropop some more time to rest, because I dont wanna feel too old or nostalgic. I'd say the peak of EDM would be 2016.

From the time you're writing it's transitioning out of core 10s but still in it just barely clinging onto it for dear life. Avengers and GOT were still heavily talked about since they just ended. Throwback pop hadn't started yet. TikTok was just starting to gain mainstream attention, most people didn't know about it at this time.

This is gonna be controversial and kinda decadeology, but to me even 2009 felt more 2010s than 2019 does. I think when we all look back on the 2010s, many more "2009" things will come to mind than 2019 things: Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Avatar, Obama, iPhones, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead etc. (in addition to some 2008 things like The Dark Knight and the 2008 election) In contrast, the most 2010s thing out this year I can think of might be the Avengers movie. Even most the core 2010s shows are long over, and the last season of Game of Thrones we are all collectively pretending didn't happen. I've been feeling this way since the summer, but I wanted to give it a few more months. Now that we're in October I'm becoming more certain that 2019 will either be sidelined compared to the other 2010s years or be associated with the 2020s (that's yet to be determined). Lady gaga and JB were popular but their music style wasn't remotely 10s back then. JB's songs from 2009 musically far more 00s than 10s. Lady Gaga's hits back then did not feel 00s or 10s. Avatar only existed in the last few weeks of the year, Iphones were unicorn rare and no one knew about those two shows back then. 2019 on the other hand had many 2010s trends going strong. Avengers, Game of Thrones, Star Wars Sequels, Trap rap, Ballads. 8th gen gaming was around it's peak and 9th gen consoles hadn't even been revealed. Instagram was still undisputedly #1 in popularity for youth. Tinder was still popular. Trump was president, Theresa May was PM. Brexit hadn't gone through yet. I could go on.

Thats not true Tik Tok was all over the news in spring 2019, in fact Old time Road from Lil Nas X blew up from tik tok in Spring 2019

The dance trend from 08 went well into the early 2010s even if the production changed, Just Dance came out in 08, Poker Face came out in 08, Sean Kingston's Fire burning prod by Red One came out Q1 of 2009. Was it 100% 2000s ? No but the general musical themes presented from 2008 and up persisted well into 2010 and 2011.

Damn, people are still reacting to this post. This was btw the first one I ever made on Popedia. To answer the question, I think the culture of 2019 was no longer core 10's however had a strong influence from that era due to the 10's influence still being very strong pre-COVID. It was very late 2010's but with some noticeable 20's influence, such as Lil Nas X, Tiktok, and at the time Billie Eilish (who actually was just a late 10's artist in hindsight, which makes 2019 seem even more 10's than we thought), as well as many 10's franchises ending around May of that year.
