I'm personally not too familiar with the Deftones', so this is the first time that I have ever listened to that song. It's not too bad. I would highly suggest checking out some of Korn's early material as well. I really liked this song when I was a kid because it reminded me of the Tasmanian Devil off Looney Tunes, lol.

I'm embarrassed I ever liked nu-metal. The only band from that scene I still legitimately enjoy is Linkin Park, and they were the least like pretty much any other nu-metal band.

Just out of curiosity, do you prefer Linkin Park's older stuff or their newer releases? I was a massive Linkin Park fan growing up, but my interest in their music has waned over time tbh. I decided to listen to Hybrid Theory in full about a month ago and I didn't enjoy it at all; it sounds too immature and simplistic for my liking now.

I think A Thousand Suns (their fourth or fifth album, depending on if you count Reanimation) is the best album they ever did. But yeah, I have also gone back to Hybrid Theory relatively recently, and while a few of the songs still hold up, overall it does seem like an immature effort. Minutes to Midnight may not be my favorite album by them but it shows a ton of musical growth.

I had lost interest in the band by the time A Thousand Suns was released back in 2010 (namely because Minutes to Midnight was a huge let down for me), so I've only ever listened to a select few tracks. "Blackout" would have to be my favourite out of the ones I have checked out so far. In any case, I think it's interesting to hear that ATS is your favourite album, because I remember it actually received quite a lot of negative reviews from critics at the time. What do you like most about it? I think if I were to personally rank their albums from favourite to least favourite, it would look like this: 1. Meteora 2. Minutes to Midnight (my appreciation for it has grown as I have become older). 3. Hybrid Theory 4. The Hunting Party ---- (I haven't listened to the albums below in full yet, but based on the album tracks I have listened to)---- 5. A Thousand Suns 6. Living Things 7. One More Light 8. Reanimation (if it counts). Edit: Seeing as though the topic of discussion was naturally steering off-topic, I have decided to turn this into a general discussion thread about Nu-Metal.

I mean, the songs are actually really great. Some standouts include: Burning in the Skies, When They Come For Me, Robot Boy, Blackout as you mentioned, but my favorites are definitely Wretches & Kings and The Catalyst. Also, I really enjoyed ATS because it's essentially Linkin Park's first concept album. Is it the best concept album ever written? Not by any means, but I was quite impressed to see them put out and execute a strong concept album.

I'm sure that I would appreciate them a lot more than I did just a few years ago. I don't know what your thoughts are on Living Things and their two most recent albums, but I think it's a shame that Linkin Park didn't continue in the direction that they went with for A Thousands Suns. I feel as though they should have continued to push the boundaries and explore that "art-rock" sound even further. When The Hunting Party was announced back in 2013, I was excited over the fact that the band were going back to their "old sound", but the album ended up being very underwhelming and now it sticks out like a sore thumb when compared to the rest of their discography.

Wholeheartedly agreed. I don’t hate The Hunting Party, but it didn’t reach the heights ATS did. Living Things was underwhelming and One More Light was fine but ultimately not a favorite. Indeed, the only thing I think it has going for it is it’s the last Linkin Park album. And to that latter point, I’m very confident in that assertion: Linkin Park may not break up per se, but I think they’re done recording.

The only song off One More Light I have listened to is "Heavy" and hearing that just turned me off from even wanting to give the other songs on the album a go. It was too pop-orientated for my liking. That's what I think too. I just hope that they don't hire a new singer to replace Chester. Mike as you know has the ability to both rap and sing, so I would like to see him remain as the sole vocalist for the band going forward. I think hiring a new singer for the band full-time would be a dishonour to Chester's legacy. If they do decide to produce a new album, it will be interesting to see what sound they will go for. I have a hunch that it will be an alternative-rock record, maybe similar in style to Minutes to Midnight or Mike's recent solo album. Who knows, they may even release an album that has elements from all of their albums, as a tribute to Chester.

Just on this topic in general, Nu-Metal is a genre that I have a bit of a soft-spot for. Being born in 1999, I was too young to remember it's peak in popularity, however I did manage to catch the tail-end of it. I can remember when Linkin Park's Meteora and Evanescence's Fallen were new. My Mum was actually the one who got me into Linkin Park. I first started to become aware of contemporary Top-40 music around Late 2002 and it was around that time that I can remember hearing Hybrid Theory being played in the car. I was still a bit too young for it too have left much of an impression on me, but shortly after Meteora was released just two weeks after my 4th birthday, that's when I really started to like their music. "Faint" was my favourite song at the time.
I was also exposed to quite a number of other Nu-Metal bands. Both my parents like Korn and System of a Down, so I heard their CDs in the car a lot growing up. Mezmerize was the album that introduced me to SOAD and it's an album that I still love to this day. My Dad also liked bands such as Static-X and Fear Factory. I really liked Static-X's music when I was around 8 years old, but I haven't really listened to their music much since then.

Linkin Park and Evanescence were still massively popular well into 2004 though, so I wouldn't say that it died outright in 2003.
