During the early-mid 2010s, people lumped 2008 with the early 10s. Looking back, the year was very 00s in retrospect. Power Chords were still a thing in pop music (I Kissed a Girl, So What), Snap was still used in Hip Hop (Lollipop, Whatever You Like, Low), R&B still has its traditional sound (Take a Bow, Bleeding Love). Flip phones were more commonly used than smartphones. Bush was still president in the entire year. Emo was still very popular with fashion and music. MySpace was more popular than Facebook. Even though Late 2008 did start the building blocks for 2010s, the year in general was very 00s. 2009 was the transitional year that is truly separated from the core 00s and lay the foundation for the 2010s, especially by the summer.

I have always thought of it as the last real '00s year. I thought that even when 2008 was recent history, like circa 2010 or 2011.

2008 felt different from the get go, I would say even before the whole crash of the late part of the year it still felt about 69/75% connected to the 2000s. When toonami got yanked, Obama became president, Electropop took off, malls stores gone, economy crash, it made everything feel different. So I would say Summer 2008 was the last time we were ever in the real 2000s. even in the summer of 2008 things felt slightly different. But the vibe was still there (The 2000s vibe)
The 2008-2009 school year is when even more things were being wiped out and gave the rest of the year a post apocalyptic feel. I remember walking around in the mall and seeing the empty KB TOYS sign falling off the front. That signaled that the 2000s were gone forever to me.

Yeah, Summer 2008 was the last period of time to have a REAL 2000s vibe to it, it was still there despite it slipping. 4th Quarter things started feeling weird and good and scary way.

Its extremely questionable to me how some people actually say this. 2008 is also when OG Naruto, an extreme 2000s anime ended and Shippuden was introduced.
2009 is the real intro to the early 2010s if anything.

There’s no way 2008 was early 2010s like 2010-2012. Even if you say 2008 began the early 2010s, it’s just the START! 2008 was more like 2004 than 2012.

* Rock was still huge in 2008, even though it was the first year it started to decline. * Most people primarily used cash or credit cards to make purchases. * Flip phones and slider phones were the phones of choice. * iPads and Tablets did not exist yet. * George W Bush Jnr was still the US President. * Shaggy hair and baggy jeans were still popular.

Just out of curiosity, what opinion do the two of you have of 2008? Is it a year that you both wish you could have experienced at an older age or do you like any songs from back then?

You didn't miss out on much. It was better that you go to experience 2010/11. Sorry, but I disagree. The Late 2000s were great years for someone to experience their childhood in (particularly 2007 and 2008). If we were talking about the Mid 2000s, however, I would agree with you on that.

It can be both, you know. And there were strong elements of both decades in that year. That's what makes it a transitional year.

Not much of an opinion. 2010 (the first year of my vivid memories) didn't seem very different.

I don't remember what I did in 2008 I was 3 most of that year then I turned 4 towards the end This makes me feel old. I was 7 in 2008. I remember the reaction to the 2008 election and the first black president. As a young black kid back then, I remember hearing that he would be the next president of the united states. And my family and I were excited about that. I remember my parents sitting in our house in the middle of the night watching the news and thinking "this guy might be our next president". After the results came in we saw the president and his family on tv in the white house and there was a big celebration. When you come from a community that has gone through so much in the past few decades, seeing someone like president obama in power and being able to celebrate it is awesome
