This feels true for decades in recent memory besides the 00s-10s switchover. 2009 felt completely nothing like the early 10s besides maybe 2010 and only the latter half of 2009 did. Even then I'm sure people we're still doing and using some 2000's associated things. VHS was used in both the 80s and 2000s but seen as 90s thing mostly because it spanned the entire decade, what people fail to realize is both 80s and 2000s border the 90s so there's going to be an overlap in culture and in society with that. TV shows like 'Friends' even had they're most iconic episodes in the 2000s even though it's seen as a 90s thing

Not even 2009. Not every decade follows this rule.

Not even 2009. Not every decade follows this rule. Not necessarily what I meant, I just think there's crossovers from one decade to another like iPhone popularity and VHS between decades because they're next to each other. Not saying the entire cultural atmosphere feels the same always. Somethings that we're popular and used in the last decade will probably still be used in the new decade because its useful or popular

I think because VHS was still seen as cutting-edge technology and the dominant form of home video, whereas it was seen as outdated in the 2000s. Even when it was still popular, it just didn't have the same level of reverence it did in the 80s and 90s.

That's not entirely true, VHS is associated with the early 2000s. its just what we're still using technology that came out and gained in popularity during the Late 2000s that make that era seem somewhat divided But my point stands regardless, neighboring decades will have similarities because they're next to each other and will have technological crossovers

Looking back now, the majority of "0" years can be considered extensions of the previous decade. The "1-2" years have some influences from the previous decade, but only the late part.

I wouldn't say 2020 was an extension of the late 10s at all
It was a limbo year

It depends on the decade. I think this was true for the 1960s. This is absolutely not true of the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s, where these decades either started early or right on time (2020s started right on time).

I wouldn't say 2020 was an extension of the late 10s at all It was a limbo year It was a transitional year. The 2020s started on time in 2020. It's plain as day given what happened.

Now that we're in the middle of a "2" year, I'm feeling more comfortable confirming that 2019 was leaning into the 20's rather than saying that the early 20's leaned into the 10's. But I also think the differences are getting more subtle all the time.
