I've noticed that when people bring up or talk about any year from the past 10-15 years, one of the first things they'll talk about are the memes that were popular at the time. This has led me to wonder, have memes really come to the point where they are considered part of pop culture just like with music, movies, TV, fashion, etc? Do you really think a year is defined by memes?

I'd say they are part of pop culture, but not a big part though.
Memes don't really have a long lifespan nowadays, so the impact that they have is small.

Yeah to me there’s no doubt that memes are part of current. But I don’t think specific memes are a huge part of culture. The idea of memes and references to them is what’s more important.

Yes. If anything, I would argue that memes resonate with the teens of today more than what music does. They have definitely become an integral element of current pop culture over the past decade or so. As a matter of fact, when I think back to what was popular when I was in Year 10, one of the first things that comes to mind is how popular the Pingu "noot noot" and Shia Labeouf memes were and I say that as someone who has honestly never really cared about memes. Kids in my classes would quite often make "noot noot" jokes and remembering those memes just reminds me of my time in high school during that year.

Of course. Memes have been one of the main staples of the 2010s. Honestly I can see memes never getting old and they will continue for an eternity.
