Despite what people and sources suggest, I believe that social media is actually drifting us all apart, rather than bringing us together. Sure, we're able to talk to many different people at once via Messenger, Twitter and other social media websites, but face to face communication is being harmed at the expense. I've seen instances where two people sitting next to each other are talking to each other through Messenger, rather than just by face to face. Technically they are two different forms of communication, but talking face to face is much more personal and authentic. IMO, when people suggest that social media is connecting us, they should really specify that it is connecting us at the expense of interpersonal communication.

I agree! I saw this couple at a restaurant. They did not look at each other for most of the time, rather, they just looked at their screens

I have a frequent social media presence (not just on my phone)

I think it depends on how you use it. If you use it to talk to a relative who lives far away, then I guess it could help you connect. But if you overuse it to the point where you are like isolated and rather be on social media all day than hang out with friends in person, then that's a problem.

Generally speaking, I think too many people are exploiting the purpose of social media and have become way too reliant on it in their everyday lives. You see so many people out and about who just have their eyes locked solely on their smartphone screen and don't pay attention to anything going on around them.

I'm terms of connecting us there and then, yes. However there are long term affects which mean we become less connected to the outside world, higher rates of depression and social anxiety.

I’m a guy who uses social media sometimes. I see photos of my friends hanging out without me which leaves me feeling like an outcast. I feel lonely sometimes. But it’s useful for keeping in touch with them.
