It's common for kids to own a smartphone device before the age they start school, but that wasn't always the case. Many people in the past didn't receive their first mobile phone until they had started high school or were well into their adulthood. What was your first experience of using a mobile phone and how old were you at the time?
My first experience of using one was actually back in 2005, when I was just 6. Me and my two cousins were at our Grandparents house one afternoon and just after about 2pm, our Uncle had decided to call by completely out of the blue. He walked onto the back-patio carrying three small packages in his arms, each of which contained a new Motorola mobile inside. Anyway, it turned out that he had randomly bought me and my two cousins a new Motorola each from the shops. He walked into my Grandparents house and told them that they were for the three of us. The only time I ever used the phone was that afternoon and from what I remember, I didn't even know how to use it once I had turned it on. My Mum confiscated the phone off me as soon as I went back home later that day. I don't know what ever happened to it. I wouldn't use a mobile phone again until I was 9, which was when my Dad started to let me play a "city building blocks" game on his Nokia. I was only allowed to play that game though and the only time I ever used my Dad's phone was if we happened to be waiting in line and he wasn't using it. Eventually, I received my *first phone for Christmas in 2011, simply because I was starting High School a month later and I was almost 13. It was a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini.

1998 or 1999. My dad got his first cellphone, it was one of those where the screen was LCD with no backlight (like a calculator).
I would call random people on it and my dad would get angry as call rates were still quite expensive. I would also call him when he was at work instead of his work phone to tell him I miss him or to have a chat, which he didn't appreciate either.

I was 19 and got my first phone when I went to college. Just a prepaid phone that had horrible reception. I remember having to stand outdoors if I wanted to call home from there.

My first time seeing a mobile phone was sometime during the spring or summer of 2005 when I was turning 8, which was when my family first got one. At the time, slightly more than half of the people in the Us still didnt own a cell phone yet, so that must have been another factor, even though in 2003 when I was 6, the number of cell phones sold hit half of the number of people living in the US, which comes from some people who owned more than one mobile phone. Anyways, the first time I used one might have been sometime after 2005 but before 2009, as I got my first cell phone when I was 12 in the summer of 2009. I do not exactly remember using a cell phone before actually getting one, though I am pretty sure I have used one before actually getting my own, though I never knew how texting on a flip phone worked before I actually got my own phone. My family only had a phone for like four years before I got my own, so it would be pretty hard to remember me using a mobile phone before I got my own 10 years ago.

I don't remember specifically when my first use of a mobile phone was, but my best guess was around 7-11 years old, so around 2009-2013.
