What would you consider to be the most overrated '80s songs?
For me, this would have to be one of the biggest offenders. It dumbfounds me as to why people rave about "Africa" as if it were one of the greatest songs of all time. Overplay has ruined this song for me, unfortunately. It has suffered from what I like to call the "Bohemian Rhapsody Syndrome"; i.e a song that becomes too revered by the mainstream masses that it takes away the quality of the song itself.

Agree about Africa. I think it has become a meme song, which has increased it’s popularity with younger people. It is completely overdone.
My nomination is this:
This song has been killed by frequent airplay, particularly on Gold 104.3 and Triple M, and presumably other similar stations around Australia. Target even used it for a period in their commercials, which made me hate it even more.

I feel as though almost every INXS song would fall under this category, tbh. I do agree though that "New Sensation" in particular is a good example of a song that is ridiculously overrated. I've heard it so many times on the radio over the years.

Guns n Rose Sweet Child of Mine. I could go a long time without hearing that due to the excess playing of it on radio and TV. I think Guns did better songs anyway that weren't the smash hits.

Oh yes, you're definitely right about that one! The overplay of "Sweet Child of Mine" is actually part of the reason as to why I've never been able to get into Guns 'N Roses.

I would neva allow the 'over playing' of one particular song, stop me from further exploring the group/artist that sang it In doing that .. you just don't realise what your missing out on The 'over playing' of a particular song .. just speaks to how good the song actually was/is. Demand and supply? I suppose that some really good songs are timeless .. which of course leads to so called 'over playing'. This one could probably be considered as 'overplayed' also .. but this version is considered by many to be a masterpiece. In fact, their whole concert, 'Live at the Ritz - '88' .. is right up there with Metallica, 'Live in Moscow'. I don't think the pure power of their performances could eva be repeated .. although Queen are also right up there too. And quoting one of the posters one Youtube.. "Bob SH 1 week ago All respect to Bob Dylan the legend but this is absolutely the greatest version of the song! I can't believe the amount of emotion Guns always had the ability to deliver with art, you can clearly see that their performances represent the very true, honest and genuine nature of their kind of rock n roll, they genuinely enjoy expressing themselves through art and with feelings as powerful and true, the end result could only turn out to be magic. Each time I find it really hard to fall asleep (which is basically every single day! 🤣🤦♂️) I'd always resort to playing this track in my head as a final solution just hoping to knock myself out and slip into unconsciousness, well can't tell if it's really working but I just hope to wake up each time right on time before heaven's door finally opens up for me and prevent me from coming back to life 😭😁🤘🤘🤘😝 " The part of his comment that I have underlined, stands true for many GnR fans. How about this song .. it could be considered 'over played' .. but doesn't/shouldn't distract from the total genius.

This thread is nothing without
Now in all fairness, I'd file "Don't Stop Believing" under "delightfully cheesy" because it has its time and place. It's fun and I don't mind it, but it's also gotten painfully lowest common denominator when it comes to rock ballads. It had a particular moment when I was in middle school, possibly because of Family Guy, and it's easily one of the most well-known 80s songs among my age group.
"Any Way You Want It" is equally as overrated but in a different way. I personally find it monotonous and difficult to listen through all the way for the full four minutes. It's not that it's bad in doses, as much as its legacy is basically as a commercial jingle type song.

What on earth is so special about this song? Just because it's cynical and bitter in a decade dominated by flashy glitz doesn't magically make it credible. The lyrics are absolutely barebones and lack the storytelling prowess of other anti-authority songwriters at the time like Springsteen. The synth production is cold, ugly, and no fun at all. There's plenty of good angry, bitter music from the '80s, but you're not going to get it here.

It’s just an okay song, I find “Separate Ways” to be a MUCH better song. It’s actually one of my favorite 80’s songs.

Totally have to admit I listened to "Don't Stop Believing" while working out yesterday lmao. But that's what it's good for. I agree "Separate Ways" is easily the superior song, but I guess it's missing an iconic, feel good line. I find the music itself to have way more feeling/power though.

I don't think "Heaven is a Place on Earth" gets enough love, it's a fun song! I always associate it with the end of "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion".

I can understand why the music video would have felt groundbreaking for the time and why it has left a huge cultural legacy as a result, but the actual song itself doesn't live up to the standards set by the music video. I would even go as far as to say that "Money for Nothing" is one of the worst hit songs of the 1980s. The guitar riff is so blatantly contrived and generic, the lyrics are awfully inept for what they're intended to do (you've got a groundbreaking CGI video to accompany your song, yet the best new technological innovations you can come up with are "microwave ovens" and "colour TV"?), its just a drab song that goes on for far longer than it should. Plus, it's also homophobic (the f word is used three times). I also think the argument could be made for it being sexist too with it's depiction of women as objects ("money for nothin' and your chicks for free"). The music video is literally the only redeeming thing to this song.
