When was the first time you heard about it? What did you remember about it before it got really big? I remember hearing about Pokemon in Nintendo Power in June 1998 in the spread below. I didn't think much of it at the time and seemed like kiddy japanese thing that would take a while to come to north america. In late 1998 i gave it chance bought the blue version game and found it addicting and well crafted, it reminded me of the dragon warrior games on the nes. I don't remember that much merch or anything else tbh around late 1998, but I was a teen and it wasn't cool to visit Toys R US but there likely was a lot, a cartoon and more, but never really noticed and then it was everywhere later on in 1999 it seemed. At some point got into the cards and some other stuff for while and was into gaming at TCG meetups and and other things but then sort of got out of it at some point. Would be interesting to hear your take on this time. When did you think blew up exactly as well?

My memories pre-Pokemania are cringe as hell, I was basically the real life Team Rocket and less cool.

December 1997News about the seizure episode was everywhere, The Simpsons did a spoof on it 2 "Pakucho" Kinda interesting that Pokémon still managed to be localized despite this seizure incident. There are tons of popular Japanese franchises that never had this chance.

I can’t properly remember hearing that news, even though it was all over at the time, but remember the Simpsons episode. Now the episode makes sense!

True, I don't even remember hearing about it that much in late 1998. Pokémania was really exclusive to 1999, leaked over into 2000 and kind of died off around/after the time Pokémon Gold & Silver came out.

I stopped watching after I finished beat Silver, which was when the Johto Crap was starting on tv

I think I had a VHS with the first 6 episodes or so that came out in 1998. I'm not exactly sure if I got it in 1998 or not. My memories aren't exactly the clearest around this time, but I remember being obsessed with this VHS even before the TV show came out.

I would say it became really big locally in late 99 very early 2000 and died off a bit by about 2002. I first became aware of it when I read a game review for the Gen I games and my parents bought it for me not long after it released in Australia. It basically all went from there I guess. Ha, that made me chuckle. First time seeing that clip and have never heard anyone pronounce “Pikachu” as that before! I think I had a VHS with the first 6 episodes or so that came out in 1998. I'm not exactly sure if I got it in 1998 or not. My memories aren't exactly the clearest around this time, but I remember being obsessed with this VHS even before the TV show came out. I still have the original airings of the first 3 seasons I recorded off TV on VHS back in the day (complete with Pokémon related commercials).

I started to doubt my own memories of it being popular in 1998 Looks like it was just a country difference. I think over here it started airing on YTV (the biggest kid channel) in late 1998 and was popular right away. That's how I remember it. bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_in_Canada

It was on younge street and know for magic the gathering possibly next to a convenience store. Recall any names?I couldn't find it last summer when I looked around. Any idea if it's still there? I remember the bouncing balls in 1998 or very early 99 can't remember. There's something about the hand drawn art and the early merch that seems more interesting for some reason. The thing is for a while especially in 1998 and in the early stages of pokemania, there wasn't this stigma around liking pokemon like towards the end of the craze and after where it was more likely friends of friends were vocal about thinking it was kids gimmick or bit stupid. There were a lot teens and even adults openly into it at the time, it wasn't really as frowned upon. Especially the game and cards.

its most likely that u have seen it before, Ness from Earth Bound is a prototype of Ash and that Alien cat boss is Mewtwo (Gamefreak made both games) Ness was inspired by the protagonist of the first Mother game Ninten, so its more likely that Gamefreak was just took inspiration when creating Red and Mewtwo. But also Mother & Earthbound were made by Ape inc. not Gamefreak.
