Mid 1986 might have had some late 80s culture. It wouldnt make sense to say late 1986 did if it was part of the late 80s. 1980-April 1983: Early 80s May 1983-August 1986: Mid 80s September 1986-1989: Late 80s We agreed that late 1986 chronologically/technically/numerically was late 80s but but pop culturally late 1986 to mid 1987 was still heavily and or superficially very mid 80s.The point is identifying the late 80s parts of late 1986 and 1986 in general ( which at most usually would be mid) Agreed. 1987 may have had a mid 80s lifestyle. I wasnt alive in the 80s, so I cant really say much, but I will take you word for it.

Would be interested in adding more to the thread.

Micheal's Jackson Bad Video was filmed in late 1986. Including this longer version with wesley snipes.
"The 18-minute long video for Michael Jackson's 1987 smash hit Bad was filmed over six weeks in late 1986 at Brooklyn's Hoyt Schermerhorn station"

One thing that makes 1986 standout compared to the rest of the mid-1980s in my mind is how much the charts started to be dominated by freestyle and new jack swing, and generally moving towards a more urban sound which later made way to hip hop. On the other hand, the era of quirky synthpop and new wave with eye-catching videoclips for MTV, iconic of the mid-80s, started to really die out by 1986. I think there was generally a pretty dramatic musical shift from 1985 to 1986. In the underground for instance, you had grunge reaching its final form with the release of the influential "Deep Six" compilation in 1986.

Other than for late 1986 being part of the late 80s, I cant really say much cause like I mentioned earlier, I wasnt alive in the 80s.

I think new jack swing was more established in late 1987 but yeah a lot of songs on control and other sounds around 1986 has some traces. These two madonna videos/ tracks off her 1986 album, would fit well in 1987,88 or even early 89. There's slighly outside of that that pure early to mid 80s pop vibe. This prince single from 1986 feels very late 80s to me: Green River 1986 (earliest proper grunge band): Dinosaur Jr. 1986 To be fair I think the lighter kind of alt rock, and indie pop were just starting to get popular in the mainsteam, I think husker du were one of the first and more punkier alternative band to sign to a major record label in 1986 and go on MTV. "Candy Apple Grey was the first Hüsker Dü album to chart on the Billboard Top 200, but despite receiving exposure on radio as well as MTV, it could get no higher than No. 140" 1986 was a good year for noise rock and heavier alternative (big black, sonic youth, dinosaur jr etc) before it was mainsteam in the underground, which had probably had some coverage outside of the underground scene via public access or specialized programs and early grunge took full form.
