While it generally tends to be agreed upon that late 1987 to 1989 were roughly the late 80s. Late 1986 in particular seems to be the earliest period to show a set of notable changes leading to or setting that foundation for the late 80s, even though it wasn't really there yet.
Since a lot of things were not so blatantly obvious since culture was still largely mid 80s, it would interesting to post things you notice with late 80s feel.
Here are some points that can be expanded on:
Freestyle and House music start entering the mainstream. Glam Metal is much bigger, thrash metal gaining some mainstream popularity Hip Hop gets bigger while stuff like LL Cool J and Cool Moe Dee having some late 80s vibes. Light alternative rock and Indie pop are introduced and a bit popular Janet Jackon's Control, Duran Duran's Notroius, Robbie Neville's Self Titled, and Prince's Parade all contain hit singles and tracks with late 80s or semi late 80s feel.
Cds start gaining more traction TVs (Ex. Sony Triniton and others) start adopting more black or dark and sleeker looks and less wooden or bulky TV design model
Nintendo Nes gets a nationwide release and is more mainstream Sega Master System is released Amiga Computers with groundbreaking 16 bit graphics are available
Fashion/Hairstyes that start making more appearances: baret, kanjol and blossom style hats, hi top fades, long hair in males and or a bit less overly styled/combed/teased hair in males/females, simplified and circular glasses frames, zig zag pattern design, and stereotypical late 80s clothing is creeping in.
Cartoons like: Pound Puppies, My Little Pony, Madballs, The Real Ghostbusters, Galaxy High and Flintstones Kids have a late 80s feel. Series: Alf, Pee Wees Playhouse, Head of the Class, Double Dare, Hollywood Squares
Movies in particular seem to be the most notable for having a late 80s feeling compared other things of the time, I've posted examples some below. Post anything from mid or late 1986 that you think is tied to the late 80s (cars, fashion, music anything) and share your thoughts.

INXS and U2, who are huge pop/rock bands, have a slight alt rock vibe and sound, you could say this might be throughout mid 80s it true but 1986-1987 is more apparent and concentrated with other groups as well :

The face, a popular fashion-style magazine, features a model with very distinct late 80s/early 90s looks (curtained hair) and also somehow connected to edgy ads from that era and rave culture.

I tuned the mid 80s out sadly lol Im more of a late 80s gal Yeah, late 80s are more interesting as whole, but late 86 had some interesting connections. Nes getting big is probably the biggest childhood thing that carried out into later years. My little pony TV series also started in this year.

Late 1986 (September-December 1986) were part of the late 80s technically. 1987-1989 are just the only full late 80s years.

Yeah a lot of people would argue that the late 80s started in late 1987 culturally, since late 1986 to mid 1987 was quite mid 80s. I thought of identifying more of the things associated with the late 80s or have a late 80s feel from late 1986. If you have any suggestions please post them as well. It's interesting to gather info on this.

Yes true. And late 1986, even a bit earlier, does have a good amount of bits and pieces of late 80s culture. If you find anything interesting related to this please post. It can be anything. Notable movies filmed in mid to late 1986: Predator Lethal Weapon Robocop Untouchables Hellraiser Also what is interesting is the hip hop sound of the late 1980s took shape around this time as modern grunge, death metal, early emo etc. Massive arcade games like Outrun, Bubble Bobble, Rampage, Salamander etc, even though the next gen of games like Commando, Ghosts'N'Goblins, 1942, Paperboy, Space Harrier etc was starting around 1984/1985 that lingering atari style games era was mostly done by 1986 going into 1987.
