Since we're at the beginning of the decade it might be interesting to dissect how popular music evolves and compare it to how other decades did it at the same time. And what better ways than comparing songs that reached the number one position from countries with the oldest charts!
I'll start with the Billboard. This week people are vibing the most this throwback to the Y2K and reached the top of the chart:
10 years ago in 2010, this R&B song infused with the more updated sound reached the top:
20 years ago in 2000, it was this latin rock-R&B fusion that attracted most people:
30 years ago in 1990, Madonna was embracing house music and voguing:
40 years ago in 1980, people were boogieing on this funky hit:
And here's the American number one song, 50 years ago in 1970:

I like the idea for this topic, but if i'm being completely honest, I don't think chart-topping hits provide a reliable insight into the trends that were popular at a certain time. It works with some songs but it doesn't work well for others. For instance, Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" topped the Hot 100 for four weeks back in 1980, however the song itself was a one-off tribute to '50s rock 'n roll and rockabilly didn't define the music of 1980.

That is true but at the same time 50s nostalgia was indeed quite an important part of 80s culture in this case. But I agree thar it's truly in the share numbers of songs charting from week-to-week that we get a clearer picture of how things evolve. I will also try to mix and match with number 2 (or lower) songs if we reach periods of boring inertia

The UK number one this week was revealed, and it's this melodic, boasting trap song:
10 years ago in 2010, the British were going to party, and party, and party, and party (wow I forgot that LMFAO had a hit before "Party Rock Anthem"):
20 years ago in 2000, the British were jamming to this soul-electronica fusion instead:
30 years ago in 1990, the synthpop band New Order wrote the National UK football theme for the FIFA world cup:
40 years ago in 1980, there was apparently nothing more noteworthy than letting a theme song released in 1970 to top the charts:
And speaking of 1970, 50 years ago this ditty was the biggest song of the year:

And since the 1960s were a very important decade for the UK here's the number one at this time, 60 years ago, in 1960. Not only there but also in the US:
The Everly Brothers in my opinion truly were premonitory when it comes to foreshadowing the sound of the first half of the 60s.

I voted for "Funkytown" and "In the Summertime". I like the idea of creating polls based on each of the chart-topping hits, I may even do ones for the Australian number-ones. Speaking of voting of charts, while I think of it, would anyone be interested in possibly seeing the "Chart to Chart" game revived? I would be keen on continuing on from where we ended, but only if other people are too.

Looks like I've completely forgotten this thread Looking at the Billboard, this week the number one was: 10 years ago it was: 20 years ago: 30 years ago: 40 years ago: 50 years ago: So, I like the 10 minutes version of "All too Well" well enough, especially the added parts and the ending are really nice. My favorite song of the bunch is "Family Affair", it's a great R&B jam with a killer beat and fantastic vocals. "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" is also very good, and sounds pretty ahead of its time. "Theme from Shaft" is very fun funk song too. "Physical" is a very dumb and clumsy attempt for Olivia to appear more mature with a sex song. But the video is quite cutting edge. And I don't care much for "We Found Love", it's a little too repetitive for me.
