It's almost 12.30am here and I have to pull an all-nighter as my dog had an internal bleed earlier tonight, so i'm trying to keep myself awake by coming up with some different topic ideas while I watch over her. Obviously the current coronavirus pandemic makes any period of time from before early 2020 seem 'distant' so to speak, however what would you say would be the most recent year to seem truly dated from a pop cultural, technological and societal perspective?
I would personally go with 2008.
Some of the biggest hits of the year were rock songs (e.g "Sex on Fire", "Shake It"), iPads and tablets didn't exist yet, people still primarily consumed entertainment through physical means (e.g renting out a DVD) and the majority of people did not own a smartphone device. I think 2010-2012 are also starting to feel quite dated in a number of ways, though the main thing that keeps them somewhat in touch with the world of today is the music scene (e.g Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga still being relevant) and to a lesser extent, the technology (e.g Blackberries, Facebook being the most popular social media site). 2009 is probably borderline between being outright dated and still having connections with 2020.
This is how I would breakdown the years in terms of how dated I feel they are:
1919 - 1953 = Vintage (67-101 yrs ago) 1954 - 1974 = Classic (46-66 yrs ago) 1975 - 2001 = Retro (19-45 yrs ago) 2002 - 2009 = Dated (11-18 yrs ago) 2010 - 2012 = Close to dated. (8-10 yrs ago) 2013 - 2015 = Somewhat recent (5-7 yrs ago) 2016 - 2020 = Recent (0-4 yrs ago)

2010 IMO. It was the last year before Instagram and Snapchat existed. And even though smartphones were a thing, people still used digital cameras and blueberry phones to take pictures.

Instagram was released in October 2010. Even though many people didn't own smartphones, a lot of people had iPod touches which had similar features of a smartphone and app culture was already established in 2010. To answer the question of this thread, I would say: Retro = 1990-2002 Dated = 2003-2008 Distant = 2009-2014 Cusp between Distant/Recent = 2015-2016 Recent = 2017 - Present

I would say 2008. It was the last year that many kids channels still existed, and the last year before Obama was president. The recession was still going on and rock, while somewhat declining, was still somewhat relevant in the mainstream.

It is definitely starting to seem dated in some aspects. However, I feel as though the overall pop culture of 2010 still has a number of significant ties with today, especially considering the fact that skinny jeans and the Hipster sub-culture were becoming mainstream, the iPad was released, "The Walking Dead" debuted and several pop stars who were popular then are still relevant now. It's distant, without actually being 'dated' so to speak.

Personally, 2010/11 feels truly dated while even 2017 is starting to feel a tiny bit dated :l I say that because 2017/18 was my last full year before High school...

I am only going to speak on the years I was alive for
Late 80s - Vintage Early 90s - Vintage Mid 90s - Vintage Late 90s - Classic Early 2000s - Classic Mid 2000s - Classic Late 2000s - Retro Early 2010s - dated Mid 2010s - distant Late 2010s - distant
Had Covid not happened I would place the late 2010s in the current category instead of distant

Hoenstly I think 2012 even could be dated. It actually kind of is, but there was still some modern tech that isn't too dated even 8 years later.

2012 is pretty much very dated in my opinion. The whole entire culture of the year feels directly opposite to 2020 in many ways. The year felt very vibrant and there was optimism in the air for silly things like Gangnam Style reaching 1M views on YouTube or the Mayan apocalypse, in stark contrast to 2020's bleakness and hopelessness.

The Early 2010s are distinct enough from the year 2020 in more ways than one, but I would say that the era still has too many connections with the present day for it to be truly dated. People go about their lives the same way that they did back then and technology really hasn't evolved to the point where the functionality of the devices that were around at the time are completely obsolete. By 2012, the majority of people had smartphones, social media culture was no longer a fringe thing among teenagers and video-chatting services like Skype were hugely popular as well. If I wanted to watch a 1080p HD video on YouTube or video-chat someone who lives on the opposite side of the world, I could have done that back in 2012.
The overall trends and aesthetics between the two eras may be different, but the similarities between Early 2010s and Early 2020s mostly lie in the fact that the attitudes towards alternative ideas and ways of thinking are the same. The Late 2000s were still a pre-political-correctness, homophobic time in which "gay", "retard" and "fa***t" were publicly used as insults (which is partly why they are the most recent "dated" era), whereas the zeitgeist of the Early 2010s specifically was driven by the growing acceptance of minority groups and embracing being "different". That's why artists like Lady Gaga and Kesha were not only significant, but also so influential. If they had of debuted into the music scene today, they would have been accepted for their unique, 'campy' public images. The #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter movements could easily have been trends back in the Early 2010s.

I would say 2011 since it was the last year before smartphones surpassed flip phones in sales, before digital music streaming surpassed CDs in sales, before Microsoft bought Skype, before Netflix started to rise, before the MCU became mainstream, and the Iraq War was still going on.

I would say 2011. That was right before smartphones surpassed flip phones in sales, before digital music streaming surpassed CDs in sales, before Microsoft bought Skype, before Netflix started to rise, before the MCU became mainstream, and the Iraq War was still going on. either 2010 or 2011 is fine

2010-2012 are dated in their own way, but not truly dated and disconnected like 2008 and before.

2019. It's as dated as the roaring twenties.
