I do think social media is bad for our health, and I hope this decade will see the massive rebuke of social media. I've already deleted my Facebook and Twitter, switched my blogging to totally private so it can be a personal journal, and really drawn down my Reddit usage (*maybe* around a post a week). I really feel like this is the social ill of the 21st century, and we'll do a lot of the heavy lifting of curing our societal problems surrounding sensationalism, divisiveness, and critical thinking about potentially false news stories if we just take social media out of the picture.
The question, naturally, is whether it is feasible to unplug tens of millions of addicted people.

I have defended social media a lot in the past. Even post vilifying some platforms, still using or celebrating others. I have been able to see the good in it. The ability to meet people and make connections, be creative, share ideas, inspire others. Things that, in theory, enhance our lives. However, within these past few months I’ve been seeing a downturn that’s almost unforgivable. All these attributes that we’ve known to be detrimental, such as decreased face-to-face socialization abilities and dare I say, depression, are not feeling quite as compensated for by social media’s benefits. Unfortunately, my opinion of it at large is rapidly deteriorating. I hope there’s a mass exodus in the 2020’s. Though I also hope that it’s a choice and not a result of enough censorship to deem it irrelevant.

Social media is my lifeline right now (I haven't had in-person social interaction since March) but once COVID is over I'm going to seriously consider giving up Facebook.

Hey man, if you really feel overwhelmed by social media, then its not a bad idea to give it up, maybe try something new or make plans for your goals and dreams, one step at a time. Life isn't easy, but my advice would be to help yourself and find ways to do so, and in the long run, you'll be happy for what you achieved. Its best to let go of bad habits. Life isn't easy, but just know what you have to do in order to push forward, and if anything is bringing you down like social media, you can stop anytime and focus on your career

I watched it, it was great. Nothing I didn't know already, but framed in a way that it all came together in one horrifying realization.

I don't use Facebook but I am completely addicted to YouTube and Reddit. They kind of consume my life but I don't know if I'd be able to give them up. I go through stages when I use them less and I am a lot happier. It's just really, really addictive for me. Also I know someone somewhere has a crap ton of information on me.

I think a good reason why we are nostalgic about the past is due to the way social media has kind of stolen a lot of normal and real social interactions.

I have officially quit Reddit and Twitter, meaning YouTube is my last remaining social media account.

I recently quit Reddit too. I only posted for a year maybe, once I finally found some subs I liked, but I realized that they almost all become an echo chamber. Lack of diversity in thought didn't even bother me as much as lack of diversity in posting style. People will all start writing the same exact way, it's weird. Same thing happened to Tumblr years ago.

I've always been turned off by Reddit since the beginning for some reason. I think it's the upvote/downvote system. I only ever go on the website by accident tbh. Anyway, as for me, I tried quitting social media in late 2019. I can do without Facebook and Instagram, they don't add anything to my life. I haven't deleted my accounts, but I rarely ever log on anymore, maybe once every 3-6 months. I'm stuck using WhatsApp to stay in touch with family, but I use Discord/PSN to talk to my friends and other communities (I was on the Popedia Discord for a bit but it was too addictive lol) I love Twitter though and I think it's had a positive impact on my life. It was actually my first social media account, before I got Facebook or MySpace. I've been on there since 2008! I'm on Tiktok/Youtube/Pinterest too, but I don't really count those as social media, or at least I don't use them as such––I never leave any comments and don't make my own videos/photos.

I think there is going to be a serious nostagia industry ( (much like the way the 80s 90s are today )for the 2000s-2010s/ maybe 2020s once VR is integrated into real life in daily way, computer chips are inserted into people and social media is much more immersive like some kind of movie. Old Facebook logos will be some kind of retro symbol. im guessing like 15 or 20 years from now this will happen.
