I was thinking lately about the movie industry and where it currently stands. This past week, two major blockbusters that were supposed to open up the theaters, Tenet and Mulan, have been postponed indefinitely. With that said, if these two movies have no release date, and are supposed to open up the theaters, then we could see a domino effect roll out, effecting every other movie’s release if the virus is still roaring. This means that we may not see a movie for the rest of 2020, and it’s possible we may not see any movies if the pandemic is going on in the first half of 2021. Do you think the movie industry will crash as bad as the video game industry did in 1983?

I don't think the movie industry will crash as such, but I believe the pandemic will definitely hasten the transition to digital-only cinema.

I don’t think Hollywood itself is going to collapse, but this very well may be the final nail in the coffin of the Blockbuster Era. These flashy, extreme budget films rely on the booming sound and wide screen experience of a movie theater, but thanks to COVID-19, they’re forced to compete in the exact same arena as long-form TV series of the likes of Stranger Things and Better Call Saul, which are themselves more like medium-budget films stretched over serial lengths, rather than TV series as we’ve come to know them. Without the advantage of those great acoustics, I can see the MCU’s and Star Wars’s of decades past struggling to compete.
