I think it would be nice to take this series of threads all the way back to 1960, although I doubt many people are interested in exploring this year in particular.
Anyway, 1960, generally agreed to be a very mediocre and forgettable year for the charts. Somehow even worse than 1959 which at least was an excellent year for jazz music. The 1950s style still had a tight grip on mainstream music, even if genres like rock 'n' roll are starting to decline following the infamous "day the music died" incident. But from this year it's practically impossible to guess how the decade would have eventually unfolded.
1. Sam Cooke - "Wonderful World" 2. The Drifters - "This Magic Moment" 3. Elvis Presley - "Stuck on You" 4. The Ventures - "Walk, Don't Run" 5. Ike & Tina Turner - "A Fool in Love"
6. The Drifters - "Save the Last Dance for Me" 7. Roy Orbison - "Only the Lonely (Know the Way I Feel)" 8. Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs - "Stay" 9. Johnny Tillotson - "Poetry in Motion" 10. Jimmy Jones - "Handy Man"
11. Hank Ballard and the Midnighters - "Finger Poppin' Time" 12. Barrett Strong - "Money (That's What I Want)" 13. Sam Cooke - "Chain Gang" 14. Don Costa and His Orchestra - "Never on Sunday" 15. Gary U.S. Bonds - "New Orleans"
16. The Everly Brothers - "Cathy's Clown" 17. James Brown and the Famous Flames - "Think!" 18. Bo Diddley - "Road Runner" 19. Elvis Presley - "Are You Lonesome Tonight? 20. Fats Domino - "Walking to New Orleans"
Yeah... I think it's safe to say the R&B charts saved this year for me

I don't know, or like, enough songs from the year 1960 to be able to compile a Top-10 list, although I don't mind "I Hear a New World" by Joe Meek and "Cathy's Clown" by The Everly Brothers.

Updated this thread's format so I can prove with my post that building a top 20 for this year is hard but not impossible
