I've read numerous articles which have pinpointed 2022 as the year self-driving cars will become available to the public. While it is likely that they will become commonplace on our roads in the not too distant future, I don't think they will become popular until at least the Late 2020s. For starters, they will be too expensive for the average family to afford when they are first released. There's also likely to be a fair proportion of people who would be hesitant to purchase one, due to various reasons. When do you think self-driving cars will become common?

Available = Early/Mid 2020s Common = Late 2020s/Early 2030s While I'm sure self driving cars will eventually become popular, for a lot of people I think it would be quite inconvenient, especially if ur gonna be driving off-road lol.

I agree with that. Although, self-driving cars might have a mode where you can revert to driving normally (and not rely on the car).

Self driving cars can't come soon enough. I'm still a bit skeptical about self-driving cars. In a day and age where people can hack into government services, I would hate to think that people could hack into self-driving cars as well.

Honestly, idk about self-driving cars. I mean I still think people should actually learn how to drive themselves and not be lazy.

Although, I guess it's just how life is panning out; people are becoming more lazy and relying on technology to fulfill their needs. Even the new Google Home can turn off a light-switch for you, without you having to actually get up and turn the light off!

I can imagine you guys 100 years ago saying "I don't see the point of cars, people should stop being lazy and just walk!" I don't think driving is a very productive activity. If we can eliminate it, we can have more time/energy for work, catch up on sleep, read a book, or save that energy for our family and kids or something more valuable. I don't see it as lazy so much as I see it as the smart thing to do. As for security concerns, if the cars are not connected to the Internet you should be okay. It would be impossible to hack. If they are connected though, it does leave you vulnerable to outside interference. Google Cars are not connected to the Internet (except for software updates), so at the base level it won't be hackable. It would be nice to get traffic data or know where accidents/construction are going on from online, but I value security more obviously.

"Who needs a car, when I can ride on the back of a horse". While I do agree with what you're suggesting, I don't think driving (at least in the form that we know it) will ever be completely eliminated, because society is becoming more autonomous and AI focused. "Why walk, when we could let a car with AI intelligence drive us around". It's a sad truth that we, as a society, are gradually becoming lazier and more reliant on technology to fulfill our basic needs. Who knows where we will be in the next 50 years. The possibilities are endless. To be honest, I think self-driving cars will most likely be connected to the Internet, especially if GPS services are in-built into the car itself. It's hard to say what might happen though.

I am looking forward to it tbh. Plus what you guys need to know is as a person who is visually impaired and is nervouse as all hell of other people on the road, if self driving cars get efficient enough and more common this could help out a lot of people to get to where they need or want to go and not have to rely on public transportation or rely on other people to drive them. Some people just can't drive and it sucks when a person lives in a small town with no other means to go any wher unless someone drives you. This opens up a whole world for another people.
Also if we can't get flying cars like i always wanted, at least let us have self driven cars damn it. -_-

Self-driving cars are beneficial in quite a number of ways and if manufacturers do find a way to strengthen the security aspect to it (especially in regards to internet/computer usage), I would be in support of them. Mind you, I still am a bit hesitant about them.

I remember when my history teacher told us that self-driving cars will cause taxi drivers, bus drivers, etc. to lose their jobs and that it's one downside with technology. Machines replace people's jobs.

Machines replace people's jobs. I think your history teacher is right, to be honest. I suppose there wouldn't really be the need for someone to catch a taxi, when their self-driving car can take them anywhere they want.
