An underrated century for fashion would be the 19th century. High fashion did change pretty significantly throughout the century (I mean it's a 100 years time period, of course it would have) with each decade having sort of having its own signature look and silhouettes. And let's focus on women fashion, since men fashion changed more subtly and is not as interesting to discuss. Here how it went more or less:
1800s: The late 18th century were very over-the-top for fashion, so the 1790s and 1800s went for more minimalism and clean looks. The waist was also no more emphasized on. Instead the bust was what is outlined in what is called the "Empire Style".
Fashion of this decade was sort of Ancient Greek inspired:
1810s: The empire style was still in fashion, but now with more colors, decoration, accessories and ridiculous hats. Dresses were especially decorated at the bottom part for some reason:
1820s: The waist is back! And the empire style is now out-of-fashion, while the puffy sleeves make a resurgence. Dress decoration is getting more complex but still simplistic compared to later decades:
1830s: In general, this was a very over-the-top time for fashion. The 1820s sleeves have grown to be ridiculously massive and puffy, hats are freaking huge, dress decorations are really complex and sometimes even abstract looking. This decade also marked the beginning of what is now known as the Victorian era.
1840s: This decade was marked by being a reaction against the 1830s. Which means more simple looks with the crazy sleeves disappearing from fashion. Dresses this decade were sobre but dainty:
1850s: This decade was all about them layers upon layers and cone-shaped hats, and once again heavy dress decoration. It also saw the introduction of the crinoline which gives dresses more of a ball gown shape:
1860s: The crinoline has now given crazy dimensions to dresses. They are crazy wide and massive:
1870s: The crinoline days are over and got replaced by the bustle instead which gives dresses bigger, well, bum areas. Dress decoration is also very delicate and full of frills.
1880s: This decade kind of flip-flopped between the bustle being out-of-style and being revived. Otherwise dress decoration are getting more simple compared to the 1870s and textiles are getting more modern:
1890s: The "Gay 90s" were an iconic decade, probably the most associated one with the Victorian era, even if this decade marked the end of it and the beginning of the Edwardian era which lasted until World War 1. Waists are getting tiny with the help of corsets, the 1830s-style "leg of mutton" sleeves are back in fashion, the puffed up bust silhouette (or "pigeon bust") is all the rage and hats are very nicely decorated:
So, what do you think of this evolution? And what is your (least) favorite period in your opinion ?
