I think we can safely say that 1984 is one of the best years of the 1980s for mainstream music, maybe of all-time even. The stereotypical "80s" were fully set by then, but pop music was still in a refreshing state of experimentation and figuring out rather than the repetitive rut it will be caught in like later in the decade.
1. Prince - "When the Doves Cry" 2. Billy Idol - "Eyes Without a Face" 3. Laura Branigan - "Self Control" 4. Limahl - "The NeverEnding Story" 5. Eurythmics - "Here Comes the Rain Again"
6. Bruce Springteen - "Dancing in the Dark" 7. Nena - "99 Luftballons" 8. Prince & The Revolution - "Let's Go Crazy" 9. Dead or Alive - "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" 10. Kenny Loggins - "Footloose"
11. Rockwell - "Somebody's Watching Me" ("Thriller" is a Halloween classic, but not this?) 12. The Cars - "You Might Think" 13. Madonna - "Borderline" 14. The Cars - "Drive" 15. Cyndi Lauper - "Time After Time"
16. Ray Parker, Jr. - "Ghostbusters" 17. Corey Hart - "Sunglasses at Night" (The production is a total rip-off of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)", but I love how overly dramatic this piece of cheese is) 18. Night Ranger - "Sister Christian" 19. Cyndi Lauper - "She Bop" 20. Scandal - "The Warrior"

I'm actually more of a 1985 fan if i'm being honest, although I agree that 1984 was quite good (well, for '80s standards) as well:

"Come Said The Boy" - Mondo Rock 8. "Radio Ga Ga" - Queen 9. "Purple Rain" - Prince 10. "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" - Dead or Alive
11. "Born in the USA" - Bruce Springsteen 12. "Panama" - Van Halen 13. "Everything She Wants" - Wham! 14. "Shout" - Tears for Fears 15. "Relax" - Frankie Goes To Hollywood 16. "A Beat For You" - Pseudo Echo
