As we all know, the election for the United States is getting closer. I know this is an American centric topic but do presidential elections change the cultural landscape? If Joe Biden wins the election, do you guys think the culture will move further away from the late 2010s?

I definitely think so. After the 2008 Election, we started shifting more and more into early 2010’s culture. Then after the 2012 Election, we started shifting into mid-2010’s culture. Then the 2016 election obviously shifted us into late 2010’s culture. So I do expect the same pattern to happen to 2020.

Everytime there is an election there is always a culture shift 1996 - Industry moves far away from Grunge 2000 - Economy bubble pops, Teen pop fatigue sets in Q4 2000 2004 - Q4 2004 Myspace and Emo blow up 2008 - Obama era, Economy collapses , Electropop 2012 - Ok this is the exception however Electropop fatigue was here, Hipster is dominant 2016 - Trump era, hipster decline, Trap take over

Yeah, the 2012 election had the weakest change. There wasn't anything significant after the 2012 election besides hipster being the default fashion trend. Here's how I ranked the magnitude of the elections from highest to lowest:
2008
2016
2000
1996
2004
2012

Second term wins usually don't change the culture since people are already aware of the president's policies and actions, and they'll likely react the same way about him or her. With a new political party shift and a new president, I'd say that it would speed up a different landscape than the one before.

Here's how I ranked the magnitude of the elections from highest to lowest: 2008 2016 2000 1996 2004 2012 I've noticed hipster fashion in the summer of 2012. I also noticed brands like Volcom blowing up too that year. Hipster influence was becoming noticeable in late 2010/2011. Hipster began to dominate in 2011/12 and was the biggest fashion trend in 2012/13. Volcom has been a thing since the 2000s.

ill give you my ranking as well 1) 2008 2) 2016 3) 2000 4) 2004 5) 1996 6) 2012 2012 obv had the weakest change with 2008 having an earth quake sized shift I agree. 2013 was far more transitional. Even after the November 2012 election, late 2012 still felt strongly early 2010s. I think things began 2 shift into the mid 2010s by the start of 2013. I feel like the early 2010s ended when ARTPOP flopped.

I feel like the early 2010s ended when ARTPOP flopped. I forget. Was that in 2013 or 2014? Both of those years are extremely similar 2 me. I can't differentiate between those 2 years. Like songs or movies that came out in 2013 could come out in 2014 or vice versa. ARTPOP was in fall 2013. I agree that 2013 and 14 were probably the two most similar years of the 2010s, followed by 2018 and 2019.

I think this is a bit of a chicken and egg problem. Does the cultural shift accelerate because of a change of presidents, or do accelerating cultural changes serve to predict a change to a different president?
Here's one case study for you to chew on: did you notice every Star Wars trilogy began (1977, 1999, 2015) just before a Republican president was elected (1980, 2000, 2016)?
