1970 is an excellent year for music, much superior to 1969 IMO. Oddly enough, despite having the Beatles still being a band and Motown and psychedelic rock still being huge, this doesn't feel much like a 60s year, at least not like say 1966 was. 1970 is like a late 60s year with much more funk and hard rock songs hitting it big on the charts, as well as the very first soft rock hits. Which used to be a genre stripping rock to its most intimate and lushous feeling, before it became total commercial radio fodder as the 1970s unfolded. Super politically engaged funk and soul music is easily this year's best trend.
1. The Temptations - "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)" 2. Simon and Garfunkel - "Bridge Over Troubled Water" 3. Lennon, Ono & the Plastic Ono Band - "Instant Karma!" 4. Edwin Starr - "War" 5. Edison Lighthouse - "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)"
6. Five Stairsteps - "O-o-h Child" 7. Eric Burdon and War - "Spill the Wine" 8. George Harrison - "My Sweet Lord" 9. Norman Greenbaum - "Spirit in the Sky" (OK, this one sounds super '60s though) 10. Creedence Clearwater Revival - "Who'll Stop the Rain"
11. The Kinks - "Lola" (Wow, this not only aknowledges trans people, but also humanizes them, in 1970???) 12. Carpenters - "(They Long to Be) Close to You" 13. Stevie Wonder - "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" 14. The Beatles - "The Long and Winding Road" 15. Freda Payne - "Band of Gold"
16. James Taylor - "Fire and Rain" 17. The Beatles - "Let It Be" 18. Neil Diamond - "Cracklin' Rosie" 19. The Partridge Family - "I Think I Love You" (For a "crappy pop group" I quite like this) 20. Mungo Jerry - "In the Summertime"
